Ohio State commits Ryan Jacoby and Noah Potter have high expectations at Mentor
Most high school football programs in Ohio are thrilled if they can produce one Power 5 recruit in a given graduating class.
Most programs aren’t Mentor.
The Cardinals have made deep playoff runs in Division I, the classification for Ohio’s largest high schools, in six of the last seven years, appearing in two state championship games. More than a dozen Division I signees have played for Mentor since the 2012 season, including Mitch Trubisky, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Despite all of Mentor’s success on the field and in recruiting, however, the Cardinals only saw one prospect land an Ohio State offer. A scholarship from the Buckeyes is elusive in Ohio and highly coveted, which makes the accomplishment of two rising seniors at Mentor even more impressive.
Mentor’s roster will boast two future Buckeyes in the fall — 4-star prospects and 2019 Ohio State commits Ryan Jacoby and Noah Potter. Jacoby and Potter, a tackle and defensive end, respectively, are expected to be leaders on the field for the Cardinals but have also embraced that role in the offseason.
“[Jacoby and Potter] have been doing great,” Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno told Land of 10. “They’re both hardworking kids and they’re here every day in the weight room. They bust their tail and they do what’s asked of them. We couldn’t be more proud of them and where they’re at and where they’re going.”
While Potter and Jacoby have already made their coaches, parents, community and teammates proud, that doesn’t mean their work is done.
“The ultimate goal is the state championship because we haven’t done that yet here,” Jacoby said. “We’ve got to focus on the little things and get better day by day and eventually we’ll get to where we need to be.”
Mentor has come within an arm’s reach of that elusive state championship before. At the conclusion of the 2012 season, a furious fourth-quarter comeback left the Cardinals just a field goal short of capturing the crown, but they still have not crested the mountain.
