DE Noah Spence (Official Thread)

MililaniBuckeye;2205996; said:
A 100% or near-100% Nate Williams is still better--right now--than Noah. Now, Noah may be better when he becomes a senior than Williams is as a senior, but Williams is still better at this point. The thing with Noah is that when he does come in to spell Williams there's next to no dropoff...
Assuming Williams is more-or-less fully ready to go (which may or may not be true), it's a nice problem to have. Similar to having a freshman AJ Hawk backing up a sometimes injured senior Cie Grant in 2002. Either way, rookie or veteran, there's a defender in place who will excel.

Meyer said they werent very comfortable dropping Noah into coverage on Saturday. Personally, I don't want to see him dropping into coverage. He's a great pass rusher, let him rush the pass. I used to hate it when the Dolphins dropped Jason Taylor into coverage. Turn him loose and let our linebackers do their job with the QB running for his life.

Sometimes when you try to outsmart the offense, you end up outsmarting yourself.

Freshman focus: Spence makes his move
October, 17, 2012
By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

Position: Defensive end
Stats sheet: Five tackles
What it means: Pressed into action after Nathan Williams was scratched due to a concussion, Spence had easily the most productive game of his young career against the Hoosiers. The pass-rushing talent didn't make any plays behind the line of scrimmage, but he played with good effort and ran down the ball to limit gains on a handful of short passes by the Hoosiers and could have earned a larger role heading into the stretch run of the season.
He said it: "The guy that played very well is Noah Spence, so the thing you have to ask yourself, OK, Noah Spence and Nathan Williams play the same position, so let?s have a conversation about that -- and we are. How do you get them both on the field at the same time is the conversation. If they?re the best 11, 4-3, 3-4, whatever, get them on the field. We?re good enough coaches, let?s figure it out. I?m not saying that?s happening, we?re just identifying who the best 11 players are and putting the puzzle together." -- coach Urban Meyer

Glad to see him get on the field and get pressure on the QB, even if he hasn't gotten a sack in a while. PSU had to do everything in their power to make sure he didn't get at Moxie, and eventually this kid is going to breakout and have a big game. He consistently gets upfield and sometimes gets run out of the play, but he's a special kind of player to be having a good impact as a true freshman.

Kid plays super hard for sure.

I love the move to OLB for Nate and the occasional blitz package it brings with Noah at DE. Simon and Big Hank on the other side, Goebel in the middle and Spence, Williams the other side. I LOVE that lineup.

Spence definitely puts the pressure on. He's going to be a good one.

It was great to see so many people rotating in against PSU:

Simon, Williams, Bennett, Hankins, Goebel, Spence, Washington, Miller,
Shutt all saw action.

I loved the more agressive play that this rotation allowed for the D. Great
game plan by Fick and Withers.

Freshman defensive end tries to negotiate college game's learning curve
Updated: November 7, 2012
By Austin Ward | BuckeyeNation

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Noah Spence anticipated a learning curve.

As much as the freshman had dominated in high school and as high as the expectations might have been for the start of his Buckeyes career, he was taking a realistic, measured approach when trying to gauge how much of an impact he could have right away.

Noah Spence suffered through a four-game stretch without a tackle before re-emerging.

The first time he stepped on the practice field gave Spence some instant validation when he saw the kind of offensive linemen he was about to be facing on a weekly basis in the Big Ten -- and daily on the practice field.

"I mean, that [realization] happened like the first day of practice when we started hitting," Spence said. "You know, these dudes are not anything like high school.

"When we started going against each other, I felt it. You don't see that in high school. Especially when they can move like that, that's not normal."
