DE Sam Hubbard (All B1G, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

OK. I always try and keep an eye open for kids from Moeller, the GCL, Cincinnati, Dayton. Did Sam just disappear in the last 1/4th of the season? Did I miss an injury report? Wha happen???
I believe he played in every game, really well. Not just mindless run for the QB but really good at reading the plays. I remember once seeing him getting forced into coverage and looked like a safety, a really big safety.

What impresses me most is as good as Hubbard looked when he was in, he never took tyquans spot. Ends will be solid next year.
Yep exactly... then you are adding in Holmes/Bosa next year too. Ends will be great and we will still get a good push up front. At this point it is just who is going to be our interior? If we are serviceable at DT we will have a good to great front 4 again.

Personally I do not care who leaves early... two reasons for this a) we have the talent to plug and b) the back ups will have a drive that the guys they're replacing may have quenched in winning a championship.

SAM HUBBARD FOCUSED ON PERSONAL STRENGTHS AS HEALTHIEST ELDER STATESMAN AMONG OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE ENDS IN SPRING

69525_h.jpg,qitok=ecc6lFG_.pagespeed.ce.V0YHY7mIzy.jpg

Sam Hubbard remembers when he looked up at the likes of Joey Bosa, Steve Miller and even current teammate Tyquan Lewis as he started moding himself into the defensive end he wanted to be at Ohio State. What he didn't expect was how it would be so soon that he'd be the one in their shoes with he future understudies peering up at him as an emulation tool.

"I used to watch the older guys, but now the younger guys are watching me," Hubbard said Thursday after Ohio State's 10th practice of the spring. "I could never take a play off and just finding that motivation to come out every day and lead the way is the hardest thing to do I think."

A year ago Hubbard knew he was in a fight to be a backup to Bosa and Lewis at defensive end, a redshirt freshman Urban Meyer noticed during a dodgeball game at Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller High School. An exceptional athlete, Hubbard first started at tight end when he got to Columbus, then flipped to linebacker. It resulted in a redshirt season in 2014.

Meyer and the Buckeyes didn't know where he'd be best suited within their drive to win football games, but ultimately he found a home at defensive end with Larry Johnson. He settled in and learned from an All-American (Bosa) and the guy who led Ohio State in sacks in 2015 (Lewis). Hubbard's 6.5 sacks even bested Bosa's 5.0 for second-most on the team.

Defensive End Sam Hubbard Growing Into New Role in Buckeye Defense

Psst. Here's a flash for you. Joey Bosa is no longer with the Buckeyes.

Nor are Adolphus Washington and Tommy Schutt, and that's three of four starters off of last year's defensive line.

You knew all of that of course, but those facts raise some interesting questions, one of them really interesting.

The loss of Washington and Schutt will hurt, but it is the loss of a dominant player like Bosa that has a lot of people wondering just how good the OSU defense can be next season. You need look no further than the Fiesta Bowl to understand just how dominant he was. Prior to his ejection from the game for targeting the Notre Dame offense struggled at best. Once Bosa was gone there was a definite change in its effectiveness. That was no coincidence.

The question now becomes, "Who is the OSU coaching staff bringing along to replace Joey?" The surprising answer is "Nobody", and that comes directly from the mouth of OSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

"My philosophy is you don't try to replace them," said Johnson.

"You just try to find a guy to raise their game to the next level. If you can get a guy to raise the bar a little bit you're good."

Before you go ballistic in the comments area for this piece, Johnson isn't saying that the Buckeyes aren't trying to replace Bosa's production. He's saying that he's trying to do it by getting players to grow into who they are and taking their own game to the next level. In other words, don't try to be Joey. Try to be the best "you" that you can possibly be.

Enter Sam Hubbard.

Hubbard played extensively last season in OSU's pass rush package. Hubbard came in at defensive end on obvious passing situations and Bosa moved inside. It was a very effective package. Hubbard made plays, leading to speculation this spring that he is the next Joey. That's not what Johnson wants, and neither does Hubbard.

"No, I don’t want to be Joey Bosa," said Hubbard.

"He’s a great player, but I’ve got to be the best Sam Hubbard."
