DE Sam Hubbard (All B1G, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

He probably will grow into a LB or DE, but there is a trend towards taller Safeties that is starting in the NFL. A guy like Kam Chancellor in Seattle is one of the best Safeties in the league and every bit of 6'3 230. I just read an article about how other teams are looking at that Seattle secondary and wanting to add some big, tall guys to their defensive backfields as well.

You see Hubbard listed at 6'5 or 6'6. But if those numbers are inflated a bit, like they are for almost every high school prospect, and he is closer to 6'3 or 6'4, there is a chance he maybe sticks at Safety or Star.

The game is constantly evolving and one of the big things in recent years is these huge former basketball player type TEs like Jimmy Graham, Kyle Rudolph, etc. As players at all positions seem to get bigger and faster, the next development could be tall, athletic 230 pound safeties who can combat these tall pass catching TEs and the Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Julio Jones type WRs.

Edit to add: It will be interesting to see if he attends any combines and we get an official height. Mike Brewster for example was the same as Hubbard in that he was always listed at 6'6 or occasionally 6'5. At the NFL combine, he was 6'2 and change.

If Hubbard is legitimately 6'5+ you almost have to project him as a LEO. If his height is inflated a couple inches like most HS kids, I think you probably project him as a LB, Star or Safety. I almost hope he is a bit shorter as we have really targeted a lot of these long, athletic DB/LB tweeners like Darron Lee and Chris Worley and if one of these guys develops into a player with the size and physicality of a LB and coverage ability of a DB, it would be a huge boost to our defense going forward and a real strategic advantage.

I've seen this mentioned several times before, but that's simply a typo on NFL.com's site. Brewster actually measured in at 6' 4" 1/8 in socks at the combine. Ohio State's never usually been that bad on exaggerating heights; they'll usually give an inch which pretty much every school does. Their first year measurables are always inflated (like Braxton being listed at 6-3 as a freshman) because they seem to take them from their HS rosters, but they always shrink down their sophomore year when they officially measure and weigh them.

Great news with Hubbard. You don't see many DB to DL conversions, but I think there's a decent chance that's where he ends up. He'd also make a pretty good SAM linebacker (:wink2:), but it seems like they're basically phasing that position out of the defense. I definitely don't see him staying in the secondary personally, but it'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

Who knows how tall he actually is. They might have just listed him being that tall to attract colleges for Lacrosse. I still remember my sophomore year of football, and first year on Varsity. I was about 5'11 175 lbs soaking wet, when the rosters came out I was listed at 6'1 190 lol. The thought of Sam not losing too much speed and putting on some serious weight while playing LEO or Viper really makes me pumped. Or Maybe he plays STAR, who knows. This kid has tons of upside. He will have a big Senior year, IMO.

"You're representing something that's a national symbol", Hubbard said. "I'm really excited to be a part of Buckeye Nation, which stretches from sea to shining sea. It's great to be part of such a big family and such a successful program."

"I visited a few weeks ago and was sold right away. I did a good job of keeping that to myself. I knew all along when I visited this time I was going to be ready to commit. I love everything about it. Coach [Urban] Meyer and his staff were just great in expressing an interest in me and telling me what they want from me."

.../snip/...

"I've been talking to other recruits who are big targets for Ohio State," Hubbard said. "I'm trying to tell them that we have a chance to win a national championship here. I've been talking to kids like Kyle Berger. I just committed today so I'm not sure what my role will be, but I'm going to help out recruiting real soon."

This kid is all types of awesome. Great attitude and character, hope he can bring a few guys in to the program. Recruits are seeing that urban and staff are serious about getting a NC and soon

Glad that we are winning battles here vs. Scummer/Stanford/Domer type of teams. Clifton/McMillian inside and Hubbard/Berger/Winovich? outside would be unbelievable.

Did you forget about dante booker? I'd take him over winovich if I had the choice, but i think hubbard may move down eventually to the line

Didn't see his football highlights in this thread.

I had not seen him play football yet but WOW...unreal athlete for his size. His physicality from lacrosse shines through on film and he is looking for blood out there. I was particularly impressed with his closing skills on the ball from safety. He changes direction well and breaks on the ball very well. Also impressed with his range across the field and the kid actually seems to have pretty good instincts for just picking up the game.

All this being said, Sam needs to keep every bit of that athleticism to play Star here...he has a TON of room on his frame and if he is indeed anywhere near 220, I see no way he doesn't get up in the 250ish range. If that happens, I think he could be a heck of an athlete at LEO and I really think his skills would translate well. He could an asset off the edge and be equally adept at dropping into coverage. Regardless of where he ends up though, I think we have a versatile kid that is one heck of an athlete in Sam. Great pickup for the good guys.
