DE Steve Miller (Official Thread)

Nice to see we could get any early verbal here. This kid reminds me of Ben Martin...I'm not going to say better yet, but he is similar. He and Chris Rock are going to make a top heavy DL class in '11.

We offered this kid? Sounds good, looks good, and I appreciate that he seems to have the grades too, but to offer a sophomore?

Does anyone else see something wrong here? As a high school teacher and coach (track and cross country) I saw that some kids who received scholarships early in their senior year became hard to deal with, academically and athletically. I've been out of the game for 5 years now and I can only imagine what it might be like to have to deal with a junior with a commitment in his back pocket.

Just to prove how out of it I am, we essentially offer sophomores?
The first date you can officially offer kids (in writing) is Labor Day (ish) of their Junior Year. With a few exceptions, coaches will extend verbal offers before that date, through the HS head coach or other indirect routes.

Steve Miller is one of those rare exceptions and looks like a college freshman/sophomore right now.

Steve has offers from Ohio State, UCLA, Florida, Purdue, Illinois,West Virginia, Michigan and Michigan State but does not claim a leader nor does he plan an early decision. Coach Heacock told him he and Darryl Baldwin were the best DL in camp.

That junior is defensive end Steve Miller, who is 6-foot-4, 235 pounds after adding 35 pounds in the offseason. The top recruiting Web sites ? Rivals.com and Scout.com ? have not come out with their 2011 rankings yet. It is expected that Miller will be Ohio?s top recruit and possibly the highest rated defensive end in the country.

?I think it?s standard-issue growth spurt with him,? Johnson said. ?He?s a young man, and I hope there?s another growth spurt or two in there.?

Miller will have his pick when it?s time to choose a college. He could go to Ohio State, Southern Cal or anywhere else he wants.

Question........9/1 is the earliest time to get an offer, when is the earliest you can sign? Is that delayed, or can you be a signed commit that day as well?

Athletes can't sign a binding letter of intent until February but they can make a verbal commitment anytime they want to.
