DE Tyreke Smith (Seattle Seahawks)

DE Tyreke Smith

Tyreke Smith has been long tabbed as the replacement for Chase Young. He is expected to be the next dominant Rushman to come from the Larry Johnson tree. This offseason can be the start of Smith’s transformation into a dominant pass-rusher. Now that Young is gone, Smith will line up opposite of Jonathon Cooper and a talented stable of defensive ends. But again, the expectations are that Smith will be the best pass-rusher on the Silver Bullets defense. Ohio State has a rich tradition of incredible defensive ends. If Smith is next in line, this offseason is going to be huge for his development. The Buckeyes could use his talent to fill the hole Young will leave.

DE Tyreke Smith
NFL scouts love Ohio State defensive ends who have high ceilings, and Tyreke Smith could be another dominant edge rusher from the Buckeyes to find a home in the first round. Smith has been touted as the next great Larry Johnson product, but injuries have slowed him down through two seasons. He has largely been a rotational Rushmen during his two seasons, but he could finally break out along the defensive line now that Chase Young is no longer in the mix. Maybe he isn’t a top-10 pick like Young and both Bosa brothers were, but he has first-round potential.

SKULL SESSION: TYREKE SMITH COULD BE THE NEXT GREAT OHIO STATE PASS RUSHER, LANE KIFFING GAVE AWAY A PLAY THAT LED TO AN INTERCEPTION, AND SCRIPT OHIO COULD BE SOCIAL DISTANCED

NEXT MAN UP.
The bad news is, Ohio State has to replace Chase Young a year after also replacing Nick Bosa. The good news is, Larry Johnson's unit is still stacked with monsters.

Behold, Tyreke Smith.

And if he doesn't step up as Ohio State's resident quarterback killer, that's fine – there's also a five-star sophomore who's 6-foot-5, 250 pounds and runs a 4.47 40-yard dash.

There are options!

I could easily see a 4 man rotation (Cooper, Harrison, Smith, and Friday) at the 2 DE spots.

I think that 4 man rotation is very likely, all those guys showed some real flashes last season and I think they're all primed to be the proverbial next men up at the DE spot. I don't know that it's possible for any one specific player to match Young's performance, but collectively they might be able to. In any event, I see Ty making a really big leap this year and see him and Harrison being the two that step up and become dominant this season.

DE Tyreke Smith
The next up in a long line of dominant defensive ends, Smith has battled injuries throughout his career. Finally healthy, he could catapult up draft boards with a great showing in 2020. But fall camp needs to start for his to take the next step. Smith began to show promise last season opposite of Chase Young, arguably the best pass rusher in Ohio State history. Now, it’s Smith’s turn. Without a large enough sample size this season, he might not be able to make his move into first-round status. He needs fall camp to come so he can get on the field and continue proving the injuries are behind him.

Tyreke Smith is ready to take the leap.

“I talked to Chase a lot,” Smith said Wednesday on a Zoom video conference with reporters. “He’s always just telling me to trust my technique, trust Coach Johnson and trust the system. Every time I talk to him, he keeps telling me to just be myself, trust in what Coach Johnson has to say and it’ll all take itself from there. I just let God handle it. I work as hard as I can work and I do what I can do to make myself better and help the team get better.

“Then I just hope everything falls into place.”

This is the spotlight Tyreke Smith was always supposed to be in. He was recruited to be a dominant defensive end for the Buckeyes on his way to becoming a first-round pick. The borderline five-star prospect chose the Buckeyes over Penn State because he wanted to be part of that tradition.

The first two years of his career have allowed him to build toward a breakout season. Smith played in 13 games as a true freshman. Minor injuries slowed him down before last season. But even with nagging issues, Smith played in 11 games as a sophomore and recorded the first three sacks of his career.

His jump to stardom is coming in Year Three. And it won’t surprise anyone.

“This year really is important,” Smith said. “It’s my junior year, and I’ve been hurt a little bit. But I’ve been taking my time on my body and trying to go about it different, eat different, make sure I’m good off the field in terms of my injuries and stuff like that, getting in the treatment room extra. In terms of football, I’m working hard, trying to just hone in on what Coach J is saying, listen to him and learn all I can from him. Do extra, watch extra film, do everything I can as far as I can go to get better.”
