DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

New Bears DE Gholston: 'I'm self-motivated'
July 30, 2011

BOURBONNAIS -- Newly signed Bears defensive end Vernon Gholston is fully aware of the label that follows him to training camp: bust.

The former sixth-overall pick of the New York Jets failed to record a sack in three seasons before being released. He often heard criticism and tried to tune it out.

"I'm self-motivated,'' Gholston said Saturday while leaving the Bears' dining hall. "Obviously, outsiders can motivate you, too.

"It's one of those things where people tend to go by what they know and what they see. With not being on the field much, not playing much, (being a bust) is the natural assumption about me. That's why I'm here, to try and change things around.''

Gholston played both defensive end and outside linebacker with the 3-4-oriented Jets after recording 22.5 career sacks as a 4-3 defensive end at Ohio State. In New York, he was switched back to defensive end after the linebacker experience failed but didn't have much success at end, either.

"As you go through your career, you look for consistency, and that's what hasn't been there for me. One year one coach, another year, another coach,'' Gholston said. "I had about three (position) coaches.

"To become a good player, you need to find something you can hang your hat on, something you can put your foot in the ground and say, 'This is what I do well.' That's what I haven't found yet.''

Gholston believes he can find his way with the Bears under the guidance of Lovie Smith and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.

"Initially, when I talked to the Bears coaches, they were adamant about me,'' he said. "That's what I was looking for was someone to feel good about me coming in and playing. And I feel good about playing for them.''

And Gholston is fully aware of the media scrutiny he'll face here in Chicago. Playing in New York prepared him well.

"I hope it's not worse than in New York,'' Gholston said with a laugh. "You can't get much worse than that. New York's a big city, though. Chicago's a big city, too. I'm sure you guys have your same ways.''

I don't think so...They've got Peppers at one end. I'm pretty sure they run a 4-3.

Bears ran a 4-3 last year. Vern will be given a great chance to play his natural position at DE. I really wish him the best of luck. :osu:

Browns had their chance! Fing Browns!

Please, the only reason people here are saying this is because he's a Buckeye. Fact is Vernon has underperformed immensely given his draft and contract status since coming into the league. You can't fault teams for not wanting to take a chance on him. Luckily though someone was willing to take a chance. Fact is, there's probably 10 more defensive ends out there that "just need an opportunity" and you don't see people here calling the Browns FO stupid for not taking a chance on them.

I disagree. The Browns need help on the DL from anywhere they can get it especially now that that douche from Philly decided he didn't want to play in Cleveland. People here wanted Vern because we know what he is capable of and like to see Buckeyes in the Orange and Brown. I don't see the Browns being any worse if they had drafted Cam, and signed Vern, MJ, and Whitner(WTF is up with him anyway).
Back to my original point let me know who the best under the radar DT, DE, LB, CB, and S are that are still available and I'll want the Browns to sign them because the Browns need help across the board on defense.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like more Buckeyes in Browns uniforms. But if Vern didn't play for Ohio State, how many people here would be MF'ing the Browns for not picking him up? I seriously doubt the brown and orange faithful would be in an uproar.

It probably has more to do with being familiar with Vern. I was ecstatic when I heard the Browns originally signed Roth because I remembered what he did in college. I'm not an Iowa homer, but I knew Roth would help the Browns get better. I feel the same about Vern in the 4-3 as I did with Roth in the 3-4.

I agree 100% with what Magua is saying...
My Falcons got absolutely smoked by GB in the playoffs and its because of they lacked a 2nd legit defensive end to line up opposite John Abraham and pressure the QB. They made DE an absolute priority in Free Agency and got a great player in Ray Edwards.

They also had others on their list had Edwards not been available and I know that Gholston wasn't in their Top 6 or 7.

He's gonna have to make the best of this 4-3 opportunity.

I'm not knocking Vern. I know he is an extremely talented player, and all he needs is a good opportunity in a good system where he can put his hand in the dirt, fly off the ball, and murder the opposing QB. I also am a Buckeye homer, so I totally get that around here. I want the Browns to draft as many Buckeyes as possible. I really wish Dane had chosen the Browns over the Bears! However, I can't get mad at the FO for not taking a chance on Gholston. The Browns have so many needs right now, that they aren't in any position to take a gamble. I also understand and have no problem with others around here having different opinions. If we all agreed on everything - where would the fun be?!

I imagine that the Bears saw an opportunity to snag a guy who was previously a first rounder at a very reasonable price. A gamble that, if it pays off, great. If not, they haven't given much up other than a good look in training camp.

Vern is another nice guy. I hope he makes the most of his new opportunity.
