DE Zach Harrison (All B1G, Atlanta Falcons)

GARRETT WILSON, ZACH HARRISON'S STRONG STARTS HAVE THEM POISED TO BE AMONG THE BIG TEN'S NEXT CROP OF SUPERSTARS

ZACH HARRISON • DEFENSIVE END • OHIO STATE • NATIONAL RECRUITING RANK: NO. 12

The expectations have been sky high ever since Lewis Center's Zach Harrison sided with Ohio State over Michigan and Penn State last December. The long edge rusher has a seemingly limitless ceiling thanks to some of the more ridiculous athletic testing numbers we've ever seen for a man his size (4.47 laser-time 40 as a high school senior).

Injuries to Jonathon Cooper and the recent Chase Young situation have led to Harrison seeing plenty of action as a true freshman. He made his first career start last week against Maryland and brought his season sack total up to 2.5. Harrison should be a part of the rotation for the remainder of the season and will have more of a featured role as a sophomore in 2020.

He seems destined to be Larry Johnson's next great pass rusher, following in the footsteps of the Bosa brothers and the aforementioned Chase Young.

FRESHMAN TRACKER: GARRETT WILSON AND ZACH HARRISON HELP PUT PENN STATE IN ITS PLACE

Zach Harrison entered the game for the first time during Penn State's second offensive drive. The Nittany Lions were facing a third down and Harrison was used in a 4-2-5 defensive scheme. He did not line up at his usual defensive end position. Instead, he was strategically placed at defensive tackle next to Rashod Berry.

With Tyreke Smith and Chase Young playing on the ends, the athletic four-man front was a success as Young, Smith and Baron Browning were able to drop Sean Clifford for an 8-yard sack. In the 4th quarter, Harrison was called upon again to play defensive tackle.

Zach Harrison ‘going to be a force to be reckoned with’

Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson has brought in a string of five-star pass-rushers since arriving in Columbus in 2014.

Joey Bosa was already on campus when Johnson started with the Buckeyes, but Joey gave way to his younger brother Nick, who briefly shared the field with Chase Young.

Now, as Young gets closer to the end of his third season at the collegiate level, Zach Harrison is the next in line.

Harrison has come quite a long way in just his first 12 months as a Buckeye. He has already recorded 22 tackles, 5 for loss, and 3.5 sacks as a true freshman.

Those are impressive numbers, but even more remarkable when you consider that this time in 2018, he was still in high school, figuring out where he would even be playing in college. A year ago this week, he was deciding whether to be a Buckeye or a Michigan Wolverine.

“Really, I didn’t decide where I was going until the Saturday before signing day and it was on Wednesday. I didn’t know until three days before signing day,” Harrison said this week.

He arrived at Ohio State in January 2019 with an impressive resume, but a lot to learn. Harrison was the No. 12 overall player in the 2019 class, rated the 2nd-best defensive end, and best player in Ohio.

Landing him was a coup for Johnson, but Harrison was far from a finished product.

“I came in early, and spring ball helped me through camp. I didn’t know what the season was going to hold. I started off kind of slow and once the games started slowing down a little bit, I started making more plays,” Harrison said.

Crazy to say but in many ways he has more upside as a frosh than Chase did. He may be more athletic since he is probably faster. He may develop into a freaking nightmare with Coach J over the next two years and we may be talking about how the Bosa bros were decent, and Chase wasn't bad either, but this Harrison dude is taking over games 8D

And then Jack Sawyer gets on campus...

His track exploits are well known. From a pure athletic standpoint, he's absurd.

I just hope people appreciate how narrow the summit is right now. Joey was a once in 25+ years talent. His brother was probably better. Chase is better than both.

OSU has #1 overall level HS recruits behind them in Zach and Jack. If they fail to surpass that outrageous run of DEs, I worry that it will be confused with underachieving.

Agreed...plenty of film on Ty Smith, so Zach could be a huge wildcard to come in. He's got the talent to break out in this game.
I remember watching him come in really early against PSU, after they took over at midfield, and wondering if that gamble would come back to bite them. Instead he flashed big time and had a huge play.
