Former left-handed pitcher Billy O'Dell, a two-time All-Star, died Wednesday in Newberry, S.C. He was 85.

Clemson announced O'Dell's death on Thursday. He was a pitcher at the university before beginning his 13-year stint in the majors.

No cause of death was announced.

O'Dell went 105-100 with a 3.29 ERA from 1954-67. He missed the 1955 season for military service.

O'Dell was traded to the Milwaukee Braves after the 1964 season and spent 1 1/2 seasons with the club, the second campaign being the franchise's first in Atlanta. He was dealt midway through the 1966 season to Pittsburgh and finished his career with the Pirates in 1967.

Clemson mourns death of former Tigers RB C.J. Fuller

The Clemson football family is mourning the abrupt and unexpected loss of one of their own.

Multiple media outlets reported earlier in the day that Fuller had passed away suddenly Wednesday afternoon under what at the moment are unknown circumstances. Wednesday night, Clemson confirmed in a press release that the former Tigers running back has died.

He was just 22 years old.

“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with C.J.’s family,” head coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement. “I’ve known C.J. a long time and watched him grow up through the Easley rec leagues all the way through Easley High School. I’m proud of what he accomplished as a Clemson Tiger, most of all, his accomplishment of being a Clemson graduate. Our deepest condolences and the thoughts of our program are with his family this evening. May he rest in peace.”

Following the 2017 season, Fuller left the team as a graduate transfer. In late March, Fuller, who was expected to continue his collegiate playing career at another program, was one of three individuals charged in connection to an alleged armed robbery in downtown Clemson.

George Taliaferro, who was the first African American player drafted in NFL history, died Monday evening.

He was 91.

Taliaferro was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1949, though he never actually played for the team as a week earlier he had already signed with the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference. His NFL career began a year later with the New York Yanks (1950-51) before stints with the Dallas Texans (1952), Baltimore Colts (1953-54) and Philadelphia Eagles (1955).

Wayne Krenchicki 1954-2018

Wayne Krenchicki (R) and his good friend Davey Concepcion, 1983 spring training

My buddy Chicki is gone. He passed away peacefully today at his home in Pittsfield, Illinois.

We were friends for more than 30 years, since he was traded to the Reds from the Orioles in 1982.

“I had to befriend him,” he once told mutual friends. “He was wearing my jersey!”

I liked how he played — so smart, and with such good hands — and we struck up a conversation at Riverfront Stadium one day. That led to many great times as his career took him to Detroit, back to Cincinnati, then to Montreal, and many other stops in minor-league and independent ball.

And we remained friends after he was done playing and managing. A few years ago, he fell down a flight of stairs and suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) but recovered enough to thrash me pretty regularly on the golf course — completing a “season sweep” this year over me, as he called it — and reminding me of it on a regular basis. He threatened to quit the game and give me his new clubs if I ever came close to beating him. Grudge matches were already planned for next season.

He loved to hunt and fish, loved his Miami Hurricanes, and loved the quiet life he led in Illinois. And he learned to appreciate things a little more after his injury. We were comparing notes on our recent health issues, and he said, “look, we are both in extra innings now.”

Well, even extra-inning games eventually end. And for my friend, at least he finished safe at home.

So long, Chicki. Thanks for all the good times and great memories. Rest in peace.

Willie McCovey, Hall of Famer and Giants legend, dies at age 80

Willie McCovey, the Hall of Fame first baseman who played 19 of his 22 seasons with the San Francisco Giants and slugged 521 career home runs, died Wednesday at age 80.

The Giants said McCovey died "peacefully" after battling "ongoing health issues."

I grew up a Giant fan and remember watching this game: In 1962, the Giants returned to New York to take on the Yankees in a thrilling, seven-game World Series. With the Giants trailing 1-0 in Game 7, McCovey was at bat with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and runners on second (Mays) and third (Alou). McCovey slashed what looked like a Series-winning hit to the left of Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson but he caught the ball.
