Defense w/o Mark Snyder

good god i hope snyder doesn't leave. and if he does, i hope the new guy has more faith in his guys than snyder did early in the year. im with 21 in i have faith in whoever steps up if he does. but i think id be happier if we were heading into a rebuilding year switching dc's.

Well, it would be nice to get a guy who is going to stay around for a few years, but then on the other hand, the last few DCs have been very good and left for better opportunities and that is always attractive to up and coming coaches, they see a spot on OSU's staff as a potential stepping stone to a HC job.

I would have to agree with Grad....

Ugh.

Are the people who want to hire Spielman for every OSU job under the sun the same ones that kept moving Dustin Fox back to safety?
Nah- I was just doing a "what if/what do you think" on him since he is a former great player and a big buckeye figure.<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p

If we do need a new d coordinator, and we probably will, do we really have a shot at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><ST1:pDavie-</ST1:p I mean is he free? Does he have any <ST1:pOhio</ST1:p ties? I don't know much about him past knowing him with a&m's d.

What would be wrong with Spielman

What would be wrong with Spielman, he has been one of the best faces for OSU athletics over the past 20 years and has been around football his entire life. (coaching, playing, coaches son)

Why not Luke Fickell?

Under normal circumstances I would agree with what is probably the majority sentiment--that he's not ready yet. But given our current circumstances, I think a case can be made that he would be a great pick. It's hardly a rebuiilding year. If it were, I'd say no to Fickell. But the system is already in place--and Fickell knows the system. And the personnel are, for the most part, already in place--and Fickell not only knows the personnel, but also has great relationships with them. It could be a pretty smooth transition. He's going to be Defensive Coordinator some day.

I'm not saying he should get the position. There are a number of strong external candidates out there that need to be considered. I'm just saying a case can be made that he would be a good choice, in spite of his relative youth.

Yes, Spielman is one of the most beloved former Buckeye players. He is not a coach, though; at least not at this time. Would you be willing to turn over the reigns to our defense to someone with no significant coaching experience? Plus, how do you tell guys like Fickell and Peterson, who are paying their dues and coming up through the ranks that we're bringing in a guy with no coaching experience and giving them a coordinator position?

He has only been a position coach for a year...he could be ready, nobody can say either way, but that is a HUGE gamble if JT decided to make that call.

I would bet my savings he is not ready yet...confidence and ability -wise.

You nailed it though, in the future he will be there.

I agree...I don't think JT would promote Fickell over Heacock like that...it could possibly stir up some hard feelings.
