Defensive Coordinator/LSU

My initial reaction as to what Snyder's motivations might be are as follows:

1. First, the issue of being paid more $$, which the board members here have analyzed very well already.

2. Second, Snyder may have matured under Tressel all that he could, and, understanding that Tressel isn't going anywhere soon given his proven success, he see LSU as an opportunity where he may be elevated to head coach if things don't work out with Les Miles, but the defense performs very well.

If I'm Snyder, and I want to go, I don't want to go anywhere after a four loss season that included appalling defensive lapses at Northwestern and Iowa. I want to go after a NC season or a near miss and I want a HC job. Anything else is very poor judgement or a boot in the butt!

I'm not sold on Miles. I don't think he'll last long at LSU. Snyder would have to learn the whole SEC and that is the toughest football in the country. It's going to be tough on Miles and his whole staff. .

I think that anyone in any profession who gets a phone call as Snyder did answers the phone. It's not disloyal or a sign that something's wrong. It's just common sense. Only an idiot would categorically turn down an opportunity before it was even explained to him.

If I were in Snyder's shoes, I'd be coach #4 to turn Miles down. The first three guys saw that it's a tough situation, with an unproven new coach, who himself has no guarantees that he'll be there more than a couple of years. Snyder can do a whole lot better than a lateral move, to a riskier program, for an extra $20K per year. Hopefully he knows that.

Snyder's staying...

Columbus, Ohio - Ohio State Defensive Coordinator Mark Snyder said Saturday he will remain at Ohio State.
Glad he's staying. The defense really played well the last few games, after they were allowed to play more aggressively.

Can't blame him for looking. You can't expect a coordinator to stay forever, since we expect to have Tress for another 10-15 years. The interview process itself is a learning experience, and it should help him in the future. Hopefully he'll stay for another 3 or 4 years, though, it's not good to have to change coordinators every couple of years.

Les Miles gets rejected by a FOURTH DC candidate? This is entering the realm of the surreal.

Surreal was when Nebraska offered my grandmother their HC job right before Callahan accepted.
Im glad he is staying, the defense showed a marked improvement over the course of the season.

Yeah. Mark Snyder didn't know anything about coaching the defense until the last three games, then he learned everything. He was an idiot against Northwestern, Iowa, Wisconsin and Purdue, then he got really good all of the sudden. Kind of like how Tressel and Bollman didn't know anything about coaching the offense until the Michigan game. They suddenly just figured it out. They were stupid idiots before Michigan, then, in the Michigan game, they got smart.

The better explanation is that we don't understand as much as they do.

Whoa! Not what I said or meant, Ironton, we are in agreement! If you review BP you'll see that I have never attacked Snyder, Bollman or Tressel. I think it was very challenging to lose 14 players to the pros last year.

My point was this. If I am Snyder, I have coached defense on a NC team. I have been DC at Ohio State and, if I am leaving, I want a head coaching job at a MAC or WAC school, something like that. I don't want to leave a four-loss SEC team and settle for a horizontal move after Ohio State's worst performance in years. Leave now and have a 7-4 year at LSU and the NC was all Dantonio and not anything to do with me. Leave now and it will look to many like you were booted.

If I am Snyder, I want to leave on a high, after a NC or a near miss, and ride into town for the next job as the golden boy, the brilliance that was behind Dantonio and who has two NC rings in five years. That way, the new AD can negotiate the best package for me, even though I am not a proven head coach. Also, I can attract super recruits and a good assistant coaching staff.

That first year is critical. You get one chance to get it right and he knows that. It's not about fault, the timing just isn't good. That's my only point.
