Detroit Red Wings (Official Thread)

im gonna call bill guerin to the wings right now. (i reserve the right to pull this comment) but as of now...

I don't think it's going to happen. I don't think Holland is going to give up another first rounder for a rent-a-player.

Detroit hasn't had a first rounder in 3 years. It's time to keep one.

hawks get:jason williams
wings get: kyle calder
flyers get: 3rd rounder, kukkonen

Yeah I saw that over at LGW....

It's a killer trade for Detroit. WTF is Chicago thinking? Giving up a pick AND Calder for Jason Williams? Huh??

When I first saw it was I like quite a few Wings fans on LGW, mainly I didn't think it was real.

Chicago got hosed. This one replaced the Anson Carter to Carolina/Keith Tkachuk for Atlanta's next 4 drafts trades as the worst trade so far.

80 this is how i see it.

calder is at the end of his 2.9mil contract
williams has another year left worth 1.6
so 1/4 of calder's salary is about 325k
so they have 1.4 left under the cap
thus they can sign/trade for an additional 5.6mil in salary

so you make an about equal move in detroits view, but free up 1.6mil in cap space for free agents this summer in essentially cutting williams loose. wings will use this for their big holes that are potentially there from all their ufas.

all makes sense to me now. unless its part of leverage in another move. which im not going to be suprised by at all. thats the one thing ive come to enjoy in the "new nhl" the chess game that has been sent up in this cba that is so complex it takes 23923 candian lawyers or one slick ny lawyer (gary bettman joke) to figure out.

Yeah.....Williams hasn't been the same since his last concussion. He can barely hit the glass behind the net, much less put shots on goal but the Wings had to play him on the point on their 2nd power play unit.

Calder checks, Calder will get in front of the net and play. That's something Detroit is missing in droves.

Now if they get Guerin I'll be thrilled

Red Wings acquire Bertuzzi from Panthers

Todd Bertuzzi hasn't played since November, but one NHL team is taking a chance on the veteran forward.

The Detroit Red Wings acquired Bertuzzi from Florida just before Tuesday's NHL trading deadline, adding the tough forward they wanted for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

"Bertuzzi is a huge, talented man that adds the dimensions of size and skill that we need on one of our top two lines," Detroit coach Mike Babcock told The Associated Press. "We'll give up a first-round pick if there are a lot of conditions met, such as us winning a lot in the playoffs and him helping us do that. We'd be happy to give up that pick."

The Panthers acquired forward Shawn Matthias and up to two conditional draft picks in the deal. If Bertuzzi signs with Detroit when he becomes a free agent after the season, the Red Wings will part with one pick this year and another next year.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Bertuzzi hasn't played since he had lower back surgery in November -- after being sidelined for more than two weeks by a herniated disc. He has a goal and six assists in seven games after being acquired last summer in a trade that sent top goalie Roberto Luongo to Vancouver.

If it works this is great....if not, well, they weren't going anywhere anyway probably....
