Deus Ex Human Revolution

I was kind of surprised to not see any thread on this (at least not one I could find in the search).

It comes out this Tuesday. I am pre downloading it right now.

The early reviews have been really high. 94 on PCGamer.

10/10 from XBox magazine
8/10 from Official Playstation Magazine

For those wondering about the game, it's an action RPG with multiple elements and styles of play. It's set in 2027, and is a prequel to what is considered one of the best PC games of all time, Deus Ex.

I have played this game for a few hours. Some initial thoughts...

It feels like a game made about 4 years ago. The graphics are ok, nothing special. There are a ton of cut scenes with pre rendered images, and that makes it feel a little dated. The NPC models and facial expressions definitely have an older feel. It's not bad, but it does take a little away from the game. The voice acting is ok. Not bad, but not up to the level where some of the AAA RPG's are at.

The gameplay is interesting. The cover mechanic is ok, and the stealth is not bad for mostly first person stealth (normally that leads to poor stealth, but it works ok here). Taking cover it does switch to 3rd person. It works, but it's not fantastic. The shooting mechanics also feel a little older.

The story is probably the key feature. It's very in depth, and this is clearly where much of the time was spent. It's similar to Bioshock. The atmosphere tells a story along with emails and other things you pick up. It can be ignored if you like, but if you want the whole story it takes some effort.

There are also conversation choices and it seems like there will be a huge branching story. I have already made a few choices that I can tell will have ramifications later on.

For now, I'd say it isn't a game I can't put down, but I will keep coming back. It may get better as I level up with more augmentations, I am not sure. It seems like a nice game which will keep me busy before the major releases in the next few months. Right now I'd give it about an 80 out of 100, but I hear there may be some twists in the story that may make it better. If you liked Bioshock or maybe even the recent Fallout games, you might want to give this game a try (doesn't feel quite to that level, but close enough to enjoy it). If those games weren't your cup of tea, then I would avoid this game.

I will come back and update with more thoughts after I finish or near the end.
