Great 11W article....

RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIS CURRENT PLAYERS AND HIS FUTURE ONES

As Larry Johnson presented Michael Bennett with his national championship ring, the Ohio State defensive line coach paused and revealed what might be his biggest key in being such a successful assistant coach.

"I tell guys this all the time: I never wanna just coach a guy," Johnson said during Ohio State's national championship ring presentation video. "I want to invest in a guy."

Perhaps there's no coach on Ohio State's staff who does that more.

Watch Johnson interact with his players on the Buckeyes' sideline or on the practice field. Watch him after one of his guys makes a big play or comes up with a timely sack. The defensive line coach is often the first one to greet his player on the sideline. Often times it comes with a chest bump or a big hug.

It all goes back to the relationship he seems to build with his players. They genuinely care for each other.

"He shows that he loves you, he’ll do everything for you," Ohio State defensive tackle Adolphus Washington said last season. "How can you not just go out there and play hard for a guy like that?"

Last season was Johnson's first at Ohio State. He came to Columbus to replace former defensive line coach Mike Vrabel, who moved on to the NFL with the Houston Texans following three seasons with the Buckeyes.

Before coming to Ohio State, Johnson spent his previous 18 seasons at Penn State. It didn't take long for Johnson to become close with his position group, either, and Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer noticed it, too.

"I always look at the trust and what goes on within the unit," Meyer said this spring. "I can’t imagine a player and a coach being closer right now than Larry Johnson and Joey Bosa."

I watched the reply of the national title game post-game more than several times, and I always love watching Bosa climb back up on to the stage and go over to Johnson an givs him a big hug, and then Johnson calls over some folks (likely family members) to take a photo with him and Bosa.

Not Everyone Measures Success the Same Way

Ask anyone. If you are involved in big time college football the ultimate goal is…The NFL.

Yeah, it’s nice to win championships along the way, win a lot of games at the college level, but the ultimate goal for players and coaches alike is play for pay in the NFL.

Football doesn’t have a monopoly on that approach. The NBA, MLB and NHL are the goals in their respective sports as well.

A player or coach who isn’t interested in a move to professional sports has to be either stupid or knows he’s not good enough to cut it with the big boys. It’s just the way things are.

Except if you’re OSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

So if you’ve had any thought that Johnson is just a veteran coach who could never get to that ultimate goal in the NFL, keep in mind what Washington found out in his conversation with Johnson.

“He’s more of a relationship kind of guy than a business kind of guy,” said Washington.

And that makes him the perfect fit in Urban Meyer’s relationship-driven football program.

Buckeye Football Notebook: Why Does Larry Johnson Make Luke Fickell Nervous?

The dream of any head coach is to have a defensive line that can go 10 deep and can be rotated like an assembly line, always producing and never slowing down. The Buckeyes aren't quite there yet, but they are close.

With four defensive ends playing regularly and five defensive tackles, the goal is within sight. When a defensive line coach brings in his eighth or ninth-best defensive lineman, however, that can stretch a defense pretty thin, including Ohio State's.

When that happens with the Buckeyes, defensive coordinator Luke Fickell takes notice — and maybe gets a bit nervous — but he puts trust where it belongs.

"You know what, you’ve got to give all of the credit to Coach Johnson," Fickell said about OSU's defensive line rotation. "I look sometimes and I’m biting my lip because I’m like, ‘Do we really want to be switching guys here now?’ and he’s got the utmost confidence in those guys, and those guys know that everybody is accountable for going into a game, and they do a great job. That’s why I just bite my lip and keep my mouth shut and know that he knows exactly what he’s doing, and I appreciate that."

"What Coach Johnson does rolling eight or nine guys up front there, he does an unbelievable job. That’s why I just keep my mouth shut sometimes. He knows exactly what he’s doing and that’s why we’re going to be really good."

Is that Tyquan Lewis all the way on the right? Guy looks jacked!
I believe so. Hopefully that translates to another outstanding season wreaking havoc on opposing teams.
