Ex-Viking Darrion Scott to Accept Plea Deal in Assault Trial
Scott pleads guilty to lesser charge of child endangerment

by Jamie Reese and Mike Durkin

MINNEAPOLIS -- Former Vikings defensive end Darrion Scott will accept a plea deal Monday in Hennepin County, the day jury selection was set to begin in his assault trial.

?A plan is in the works for a plea deal,? Scott?s defense attorney, Joe Friedberg, said.

PLEA DEAL: GROSS MISDEAMEANOR

Scott is expected to plea guilty to a lesser charges filed Monday morning -- a gross misdemeanor of child endangerments related to Scott holding a plastic dry cleaning bag over his child?s head.

The other charges, relating to an unsecured gun and previous injuries to the two-year-old boy, will be dropped

SENTENCING BEFORE NFL TRAINING CAMP?

Sentencing will be held at a later date, which may be scheduled before NFL training camps open. Scott is an NFL free agent.

The guilty plea could carry some jail time, depending on the judge?s sentence.

Scott was charged in May with assault and child endangerment for allegedly holding a plastic bag over his two-year-old son's head at his Eden Prairie home in April.

ORIGINAL CHARGES

Scott had been charged in Hennepin County District Court with third-degree assault and domestic assault by strangulation, both felonies. He also is charged with endangerment of a child for allegedly keeping a loaded, unsecured handgun in his unlocked nightstand, where a two-year-old could have easy access to it.

MOTHER: SCOTT HELD DRY CLEANING BAG OVER BOY'S HEAD

A woman told police Scott asked the boy to spend the night at his Eden Prairie home on April 25. When she went to pick up her son the next day, she walked through the unlocked door and heard crying.

When she entered the home, she found Scott leaning over the boy, who was on his back crying and kicking his legs. The boy had a dry cleaning bag over his head and Scott was holding it tight around the boy?s neck. Scott told the woman they were playing and he wanted to see if the boy could get the bag off by himself.

Maybe the next time an OL pancakes him, he should just lay on him and see how long it takes Scott to get him off. :roll1:

but hopefully an NFL linemen never does that because his NFL days are over.

Just wondering how long it takes you, when a rather large man lays atop you, to "get him off?"

Just play'in with ya tibes, your points are dead-on. Drugs, loaded guns, and abusing children are typically not what NFL teams are looking for in their next multi-million dollar investment. Wonder what happened to this kid, I never recall any problems when he was here.

Peace.

Ex-Viking Scott pleads guilty to child endangerment
Darrion Scott, who called putting a bag over a toddler's head "stupid and reckless," had assault charges dropped and he likely won't go to jail.

By ABBY SIMONS, Star Tribune

Last update: July 8, 2008

A former Minnesota Vikings player admitted that putting a plastic dry cleaning bag over his 2-year-old son's head was "stupid and reckless" and pleaded guilty Monday to child endangerment.

Darrion Scott, 26, entered the plea on the day that jury selection was scheduled to begin for felony third-degree assault and domestic assault by strangulation following the April 28 incident at his Eden Prairie townhouse.

According to the criminal complaint, the boy's mother heard the child's muffled cries and found Scott, 6 feet 3 inches and 290 pounds, holding the bag over the boy's head. She said that the boy was on his back on the floor, his legs kicking, and that Scott was holding the bag tightly around the boy's neck.

Those charges were dropped in return for Scott's admission to child endangerment. The gross misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to a year in prison, and prosecutors say it is unlikely that he will serve any jail time.

In his statement, Scott, who was a defensive lineman for the Vikings, said he was attempting to entertain the boy, identified in court as L.D., by putting the bag on his own head while dancing and pretending to be the "boogeyman."

When the toddler became upset, Scott said he took the bag off his own head and placed it on his son's head to show that it wouldn't hurt him.

When the boy became even more upset, Scott said he tried to take the bag off but it became hooked on his son's chin. He claimed he was holding the struggling boy down to get the bag off when his mother entered the room.

On the day former Minnesota Viking Darrion Scott was to pick a jury to decide if he had assaulted and strangled his 2-year-old son, the beefy defensive end pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

In a deal with prosecutors, Scott, 26, pleaded guilty to child endangerment for sticking a dry-cleaning bag over his son's head in April.

It was all part of a game in which the 289-pound Scott was playing the "bogeyman," he told a judge in a written statement his lawyer read into the record. But Scott conceded, "There is no question in my mind that what I did was stupid and reckless."

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 12 months in jail, and prosecutors said the sentence, scheduled to be imposed July 24, probably would be stayed while Scott served probation.

Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman said the plea was appropriate given what prosecutors thought they could prove before a jury.

"It just really appeared that it was very problematic to prove that he intended to strangle this little boy," Freeman said. "You gotta prove it. The fact of the matter is, there were things in the (criminal) complaint that we didn't think we could prove."

There are many times I wonder that, when you hear stories like this. Something make the snap? Have they always been like this but never caught, or are they just dumb. Guess you just never know, no matter who it is.

Ex-Vikes DE Scott suspended after incident with child
By John Clayton

Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Darrion Scott received a three-game suspension for 2008 for violations of the league's conduct policy, the league informed teams Monday.

Scott pleaded guilty last week to a gross misdemeanor last week in a case involving child endangerment. He faced two felony charges for putting a plastic bag over the head of his 2-year-old son. Scott accepted the lesser plea of child endangerment.

He faced a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine. A former third-round choice of the Vikings in 2004, Scott is looking for a new team after the Vikings decided not to re-sign him this offseason.

A couple of teams were interested in signing him prior to his arrest. Now, Scott is eligible to sign with any team and participate in training camp. His suspension would begin the first week of the regular season. After three weeks, he would be eligible to play.

Because he had a December arrest after a small amount of marijuana was found in his car, the multiple offenses put him under possible conduct policy penalties.

Going through the whole process with the wife again over the past two months since having another baby just reminds me of the level of frustration you sometimes have as a parent. There are times where you want to throw a toy across the room or kick the dogs water bowl. It happens. How you handle those frustrations is a big part of being a parent. Everybody gets those fits at some point when raising a family. You learn to walk away, leave the room, or even leave the house, call on another family member to give you a break, take a deep breath and regroup, or do anything at all to reign in your emotions when anger or frustration gets the better of you.

When we had our baby back in May, we were required to watch a parenting video on shaken baby syndrome before leaving the hospital, plus another on car seat safety. The hospital did not care that my wife and I had previously had children, they have made viewing these educational videos mandatory. When I think of 'snapping,' I'm inclined to think of those scenarios from the video, ones where the most unassuming parent immediately responds, unflinching, with physical force because something pushes them over the edge: Shaking a baby that's been crying for hours and hours, or smacking a mouthy pre-teen when the kid gets the courage (or stupidity) to back-talk mom and dad.

Darrion Scott's situation is different. Getting a plastic bag and attempting to suffocate a toddler is not 'snapping.' That is some cold-blooded, premeditated shit.

Ex-Viking Darrion Scott fined $200, sent to parenting classes
By Rodrigo Zamith, Star Tribune

Last update: July 24, 2008 A former Minnesota Vikings player received a $200 fine Thursday for putting a plastic dry cleaning bag over his 2-year-old son.

Darrion Scott, 26, quietly accepted the sentence after waiting nearly an hour outside the courtroom by himself.

He also received a two-year stayed sentence, and could face jail time if he has contact with his son or wife unless it's approved by family court or if he is found taking illegal or non-prescribed drugs.

He was also ordered to attend parenting classes.

"I think you need that more than anything else," Nord told Scott.

Scott, an unrestricted free agent, received a three-game suspension from the NFL for violations of the league's conduct policy last week. His lawyer, Joseph Friedberg, argued the lost wages alone had already been enough punishment for Scott.

"Mr. Scott admits it was a stupid thing to do," his lawyer, told the court. "The lesson has been learned."

A psychologist warned that former Minnesota Viking Darrion Scott's play with his young son modeled "dangerous" behavior, but a judge today placed him on two years' probation and fined him $200 for endangering the child in April.

"I'm not going to make it an outrageous fine because I think you need the money right now to pay child support," Hennepin County District Judge Beryl Nord told the footballer as he stood before her.

If Scott can stay out of legal trouble for two years, his plea to the gross misdemeanor charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor.

Joseph Friedberg, Scott's attorney, told the judge that his client knew that what he did was wrong.

"The lesson has been learned," Friedberg said. "This is a young man who will never pass this way again."

Scott, 26, once a defensive end for the Vikings, pleaded guilty this month to child endangerment; he held a plastic laundry bag over his 2-year-old son's head while the two were playing. The child's mother walked in and discovered them, and called police.

When he entered his plea, the 289-pound Scott said in a written statement to the judge that he was playing the "bogeyman" when he placed the bag over the child's head. But he admitted that there "is no question in my mind that what I did was stupid and reckless."

He could've gotten a year in jail, but as part of the plea bargain, prosecutors dropped three more serious charges and recommended that the sentence be stayed for two years.

Ex-Minnesota Viking Darrion Scott: 'I'm not the person I was portrayed to be'
By Sean Jensen

Updated: 03/27/2009

Darrion Scott sits on the wraparound chair circling the indoor playground at Eden Prairie Center, watching his 4-year-old daughter Aniah's every move.

The former Vikings defensive end clearly doesn't blend in. On this particular Friday, he's one of only two or three men in a play area teeming with toddlers, mothers and nannies. But this is his and Aniah's routine.

"That's our hot spot," Scott said. "We always get ice cream and go to the playground.

"It's hopefully one of those things she will always remember."

A caring father, however, is not the prevailing image of Scott.

Last April, Scott was arrested and charged with two felonies (third-degree assault and domestic assault by strangulation) and two gross misdemeanor charges (for child endangerment) after placing a plastic dry-cleaning bag over his then-2-year-old son's head. In July, the felony charges were dropped and Scott admitted to one of the gross misdemeanors. He received a $200 fine and two years of probation.

A potential one-year prison sentence was stayed for two years, as long as he met certain requirements during that time, including no contact with his son without court approval.

And there was collateral damage to his career.

Last year, the New England Patriots and Washington Redskins were interested in Scott, but backed off after the incident. Because this was not his first legal issue ? Scott was arrested in December 2007 on misdemeanor marijuana-possession charges

? the NFL suspended him for the first three games of the 2008 season.
This year, at least one NFL coach incorrectly believed Scott still had to serve the suspension, said his agent, Tim DiPiero.
