Fick as head coach, Vrabes as LB coach, and Finkes on Buckeye Football Fever. Pretty fuckin' sweet that the DL from my youth is involved like this at such a young age. :banger:

Finkes gets fired the fuck up on BFF.

Off topic, but when the fuck did Doug Leselle (sp?) come back? I hadn't heard from him in years it seems, then he's on the post game show on WSYX.

Strange.

Talented But Young Defense

Posted by Matt Finkes on 8/26/2013
Welcome to the Ohio State Huddle, Buckeye Nation!! We all know that Urban is known for his high powered offenses and how he never takes his foot off the pedal when it comes to scoring points, but let's talk about the side of the ball that REALLY matters! Everyone knows, “DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS”!

The Buckeyes definitely had some issues when it came to the defensive side of the ball last year. Luke Fickell and Everett Withers seemed to have some growing pains working together at points last season including blown coverages, missed assignments and poor tackling. Poor fundamentals were talked about throughout the Buckeye Nation during the season.

Depth at linebacker was so sparse that Zach Boren was moved from the offensive side of the ball to start at linebacker midway through the season. Though, as all great teams do, the Bucks found a way to make it work on their way to a, perfect, 12-0 season. This season, the depth is there, but the lack of experience at some positions could possibly slow the Silver Bullets down, if the young players can't get up to speed in time.

In the game of football, it all starts up front. For the Buckeyes in 2013, games started will be something this front four lacks in experience. The loss of Nathan Williams, John Simon, Johnathan Hankins and Garrett Goebel leave the Buckeyes with no returning starters, but fear not, the fresh crop of young d-lineman are loaded with talent.

Two guys who received a lot of playing time last season are sophomores, former 5-star recruits, Adolphus Washington and Noah Spence. Look for these two to make plays in bunches from the end positions this season. In 1994, the Buckeyes fielded two new starting sophomore ends, including freshman Orlando Pace, who played both sides of the ball. (added this as an interesting suggestion) Even with such a young d-line it worked out pretty well for the next 3 years! Defensive line coach Mike Vrabel is proving to be a rising star in the coaching ranks, and being the career leader in OSU history for sacks, he might have a few tricks up his sleeves to teach these youngsters. Look for Michael Bennett and Tommy Schutt to be the guys on the inside and young newcomer Joey Bosa to get on the field at some point.

Where Can the Buckeye Defense Improve After Week 1?
Posted by Matt Finkes on 9/4/2013

One of the top questions Buckeye fans will be asking after Ohio State’s anticlimactic Week 1 win over Buffalo is obvious: Where do the Buckeyes need to improve on defense? The short answer to that question is simple: everywhere. However, after having nine brand new starters and playing with 10 new faces for a majority of the game due to Ryan Shazier's cramping issues, I would say all in all it was a good outing for the Buckeye defense.

Now we always hear the biggest improvement for a team is between week one and two. Well here we sit Buckeye Nation, so how are they going to get better and what are the things they need to improve upon?

Ohio State Impact Player vs. Cal

Not really any surprises here, I think I will go with the 5th-year senior who made his first start for the Buckeyes after appearing in an almost cult hero way for the past 2 years.... Kenny Guiton. After his historically-orchestrated overtime comeback performance last season against the Boilermakers, Kenny has found himself at the crossroads of opportunity and preparation since the beginning of this season. When Heisman candidate Braxton Miller found the sidelines in game one with cramping issues, Kenny G came in and did what he does best, throw a touchdown, and after he trotted off the field like it was just another day at practice. In week 2, when Braxton left in the first quarter with a knee injury, Kenny G again rose to the occasion and led the Buckeyes to 42 points and another victory. So what do we expect for an encore and his first ever start?

The First Real Test for the Front 7
Posted by Matt Finkes on 9/26/2013

After playing some less than stellar opponents in weeks one through four, the Buckeye front seven looks to have its first real test when the Wisconsin Badgers roll into the Shoe on Saturday night. Starting the season with four pass happy, spread-offense football teams has really done nothing to prepare this young group for what is coming. It is ironic how the game of college football has changed so much that when a running offense comes along, who operate with a fullback or two tight ends, it is almost viewed as a change-up offense.

In the modern game of football, the shotgun-attack, spread offense is king. Even the Big Ten, known as the slow, plodding power run-oriented conference, has morphed with the run-and-gun offenses of Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska and Northwestern.

Braxton is Back
Posted by Matt Finkes on 9/30/2013

It is pretty easy to select an impact player of the game this week. The news and stories were flying around Columbus for the last two weeks: Is there a QB controversy at OSU? Should Kenny Guiton be getting playing time even when Braxton Miller returns? Well #5 came out and answered those questions with three first half touchdown passes, leading the Buckeyes to their first win over a ranked opponent this season. There was little to no rust on Braxton Saturday night at the Shoe. He was able to come out, make quick decisions and deliver the ball on time from the beginning of the game.

We learned after the game that the coaching staff had assured him this was his position and his team, so the thought of looking over his shoulder at fan favorite Kenny Guiton if things didn't start well was absent from his mind. He came out of the gate delivering the ball with zip and precision, finding the open man and making difficult throws on the run with equal ease.
