The Old and the New Drive the Buckeyes over Northwestern
Posted by Matt Finkes on 10/7/2013

When you have a championship-caliber team in college football, you need to have the perfect combination of senior leadership and youthful talent. Saturday night, with the Buckeyes on the ropes, two players stepped up their game. One the elder statesman, a running back with something to prove and the hopes of a state riding on his legs, the other a true-freshman defensive lineman with a motor the doesn't turn off.

Defensive Philosophy Changes for Buckeyes
Posted by Matt Finkes on 11/3/2013

After coming off a 63-14 win last week and holding freshman QB sensation Christian Hackenberg to his worst day as a collegiate, then turning around and shutting out the hapless Boilermakers, one would think that the OSU defense is merely preying on bad teams. I don't think this is totally the case. I have seen a real change in the mentality of this defensive squad since the sub-par run they had against Wisconsin, Northwestern and Iowa. Granted those last three teams mentioned were better quality teams than the Buckeyes have faced the past two weeks, but fans have seen not only a change in the confidence of the Silver bullets that comes with playing an inferior opponent, but a definite change in style and attitude that can only come from a change in coaching philosophy.

Even going back to last season, I have felt there is an internal struggle going on between Urban Meyer and his defensive coordinators. I played and lived with Luke Fickell for 4 years in college and know his personal attitude pretty well. If you look back at the OSU teams of the early to mid-2000s when Fickell was the co-coordinator alongside Jim Heacock (who is now a consultant for this team), fans saw a blitzing team that disrupted the passer and took a calculated risk almost every play.

Finkes in the studio during the lunch hour on Carpenter & Rothman today on 97.1.

Best story, said he and Luke were in different weight classes in high school so didn’t wrestle in sanctioned matches growing up. They wrestled four times freestyle in high school and ended up 2-2.

They were housemates at Ohio State and had the rubber match a hundred times. 1. Vrabel wanted in on that action repeatedly. 2. They figured out after three weeks living together to never furnish the living room.
