COWBOYS NOTES

Henson loses touch in quarterback race

Once considered the Cowboys' quarterback of the future, Drew Henson has been a puzzle to the team in his lack of development.

<!-- begin body-content --> OXNARD, Calif. -- The flip side of Tony Romo's rise to relevance as the team's possible future at quarterback is Drew Henson's three-year fade.
Acquired in a trade with the Houston Texans in 2004 and given $3.5 million in guaranteed money, Henson was supposed to develop into the Cowboys' long-term answer at the position.
After being the primary backup to Vinny Testaverde in 2004, Henson dropped to No. 3 behind Romo last season. In Tuesday's practice, he sat out while rookie Matt Baker took snaps with the third unit.
While coach Bill Parcells said Henson isn't in jeopardy of losing his job to Baker, he acknowledged that his development time is running out and the Cowboys need to see some progress.
"I'm trying to decide what to do," Parcells said.
Asked how Henson has played, Parcells responded with, "I'd say it's been average so far."
He said Henson's career has been held back because he has trouble relaxing on the field. Parcells compared him to one of his former players, Sam Gash, who would hyperventilate in the huddle before learning to stay calm.
"I think one of the most beneficial things you can do for a player sometimes is try to teach them a mechanism whereby in the battle they can learn to relax," Parcells said. "The guy has to be able to think this through. It's the same thing as trying to tell a fighter in a fight you have to learn to relax in there. Well, it's hard to when you are getting the you-know-what punched out of you. So this is something I try to do with players from time to time. I have been trying to talk to Drew a little bit about that."
Vanderjagt injured
Cowboys kicker Mike Vanderjagt said he expects to kick today for the first time this week.
Vanderjagt has been nursing a sore groin and worked with the Cowboys trainers stretching and doing some light running.
"I have a bit of a groin issue, but it's not that big of a deal," Vanderjagt said. "I just wanted to rest. We've been kicking a lot."
Vanderjagt expects to be ready for Monday's game against New Orleans in Shreveport.
"If Monday was today, I would probably kick," Vanderjagt said. "It's mild and I would like it to go away, so I'm just taking precautions."
Briefly
Bill Parcells said Rob Petitti will get time at left tackle against New Orleans on Monday. Although Petitti is still in the running at right tackle, he has not progressed as fast as the Cowboys hoped and is running behind Marc Colombo and Jason Fabini for the starting role.
Parcells said rookie safety Pat Watkins has been one of the biggest surprises of training camp. Watkins is in contention to unseat starter Keith Davis at free safety. Watkins will play a large role as a rookie, possibly as a nickel safety and definitely on special teams, where Parcells said he is already a superior performer.

Parcells: QB Henson won't be with Cowboys in '06

Drew Henson's days with the Dallas Cowboys are numbered.

"Drew Henson is not going to be on roster this year," Bill Parcells told reporters Wednesday.
"I just didn't see enough. We tried very diligently with this guy," Parcells said.
The Cowboys didn't announce any roster moves involving Henson on Wednesday.
Henson was inactive as the No. 3 quarterback in all 16 games behind Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo last season. He took snaps at quarterback just twice in 2004, and was replaced in the second half by Vinny Testaverde in the only game he has started for the Cowboys.
In March 2004, the Cowboys acquired Henson as their apparent quarterback of the future from the Houston Texans, for a third-round draft pick. The Texans drafted Henson in the sixth round in 2003. Dallas gave him an eight-year contract that guaranteed him $3.5 million and could be voided after four years.
Before that, Henson had played three seasons of professional baseball in the New York Yankees organization. His last snap in a meaningful game had been for Michigan in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day 2001.
Henson started eight games that 2000 season with Michigan, a year after he had split time with Tom Brady.

They should keep him around just so he can play soft toss with TO. They're a perfect pair - they're both dickheads, overhyped, and neither of them has played a down of football that mattered in ages.
