They Call Me Assassin
I saw the thread on Lorenzo Hunter who would have graduated this year but was murdered in 2004. This got me to thinking about other HS football stars cut down in their prime.

Other players made bad decisions that ruined their life, let alone their careers (i.e. Ray Williams).

But, I was trying to remember the name of the tOSU recruit who commited to play for us and then died his senior year while playing basketball or something. He was from Toledo Rogers HS. He would have been a member of the same class as Clarett. I know there are plenty of people here who remember.

DruShawn Humphries...RIP

Thanks. It is always sad to see a young person die. So much promise and potential and ability and talent just lost to the void.

Ricky Matter is another that comes to mind. The two-year anniversary of his death is coming up on Feb. 14, 2006. Truely sad. It is events like these that make all of us recruitniks and diehard Buckeye fans take pause and appreciate the fact that there is more to life than just Buckeye football. I would gladly exchange all of the wins of my beloved Buckeyes over the last several years if it meant that these kids would still be with us. May they rest in peace and God Bless their families. Buckeye thoughts and prayers go out to them.

According to Duane and others, Humphries was a bigger, faster more durable back than MoC coming out of HS. I don't know if he had MoC's vison but I often think of how special it would have been to have them both for the past 3-4 years.

Remembering things like this do help bring things into perspective. I remember when I heard about JT giving Dru's family an NC ring I thought, what a class act. Also remember losing Gwynn. RIP guys.

I cant find anything on Jason Gwinn i'd like to hear what happened to him too. I did find an article on Ricky Matter what year did he die though 04 or 05 the article didnt have a date on it? And what year was he in high school? I dont recall ever hearing about him, so his name was news to me.

As for Drushawn, i live in Toledo and i remember hearing about his death like it just happened yesterday. It was real sad around here. He was a big kid i think he was listed at 6-3 240.

Ohio State gridder dies in car accident - Ohio State University reserve defensive end Jayson Gwinn - Brief Article
Jet, Jan 10, 1994

Ohio State University reserve defensive end Jayson Gwinn, 20, recently died in a two-car collision shortly after leaving a nightclub where a teammate had been shot.

Gwinn, a sophomore was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, university spokesman Malcolm Baroway said.

Just before he died, Gwinn had taken teammate Marvin "Obie" Stillwell to the hospital. Stillwell had been shot once in the buttocks outside a nightclub near the campus. Stillwell was hospitalized in good condition.

After leaving Stillwell, Gwinn's car collided with another driven by a 21-year-old Ohio State student. The other student was hospitalized in fair condition.
