Looking ahead to 2012 class
Posted by mdyer 12/01/10

National signing day is about two months away (Feb. 2), but the recruiting journey for some area football players from the 2012 class has been active for quite some time.

Seven area juniors have verbal scholarship offers as of the beginning of December, according to reported information from area high school coaches.

?Cincinnati is loaded for 2012,? said Mark Porter, director of ScoutingOhio.com. ?It?s very rare that kids get early offers and especially this many players. And early offers are usually handed out by big-time programs looking to get an edge on the rest.?

The 2012 class will be led by Taft defensive end Adolphus Washington, who is considered one of the nation?s top college prospects. Washington, who is 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, is being recruited by almost every major college program in the country, according to Taft coach Mike Martin.

Washington, who had 107 tackles, 19 sacks and was the Division IV Southwest District defensive player of the year, has at least 16 offers, according to Martin.

Those schools that have offered include UC, Ohio State, Alabama, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Texas, Illinois, Texas A&M, Boston College and others. Martin told The Enquirer this summer that Washington could have 40 written offers by Sept. 1 ? the first day schools can issue written offers.

?Adolphus Washington might be one of the more special players in the class,? Porter said. ?Washington blows up the mold when it comes to size to speed ratio. And when you throw in how quick and explosive he can be the early offers make total sense.?
