DT Dexter Larimore (official thread)

Someone on BN said that the Michigan game wasnt very impressive to him with some beer bottle incident and the low crowd noise. Also said he watched the OSU vs. Texas game and was impressed with our crowd and our defense. Not sure if it's true no articles are allowed to be linked on BN of course.

He stated that while both stadiums were huge, OSU's fans were much more involved and enthusiastic. Sounded like he really had his eyes opened with the game.
Considering that we have one other member of the FB team wrestling, this could be a nice situation for him.

VALPARAISO — Merrillville needed a game like this.

So did Evan Parker.

The Pirates’ quarterback combined with a dominating defense to hammer Valparaiso 30-0 on Friday, spoiling the Vikings’ homecoming.

One week after a demoralizing, double-overtime loss to LaPorte, Merrillville bounced back. The Pirates outgained the Vikings 308-115 and recorded six interceptions, including three from Drew Dawson.

“I believe we should have won that game last week, so I wanted to come out this week and work hard,” said Parker, who had two rushing touchdowns and threw for another.

Said Dawson: “We’re confident, real confident now. A shutout after a real sad loss — it’s a huge comeback.”

Notre Dame-bound running back James Aldridge nearly scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage — a 68-yard run through the Vikings’ defense. One play later, Aldridge entered the end zone from 2 yards out for a 7-0 Pirates lead with 11:22 remaining.

On the Vikings’ first possession, Carl Hoefler was picked off by Dawson, who returned the interception 43 yards to Valpo’s 4-yard line. On the next play, Parker ran a quarterback keeper untouched to paydirt. With only 2:16 off the clock, the Pirates were up 14-0, with just one first down.

“Those big plays set the tone,” Merrillville coach Jeff Yelton said. “We got them back on their heels.”

Following a 9-yard Vikings punt late in the second quarter, the Pirates scored again, this time on a 13-yard run from Parker. Ryan Stokes missed the extra point, but the Pirates (5-2, 3-2 Duneland) still held a 20-0 advantage at the half.

The edge grew to 27-0 following a 63-yard touchdown pass from Parker to Chad Dawson with 5:32 left in the third quarter.

With its offense struggling, Valpo inserted sophomore quarterback Alex Sarkisian for Hoefler on the game’s next possession. But the ploy failed as Rayshon Richardson intercepted Sarkisian’s third pass.

Aldridge nearly scored two plays later, rushing 32 yards to the Vikings’ 2-yard line. But Aldridge fumbled on the next play, and Valpo (3-4, 2-3) recovered on its 1-yard line.

Merrillville, which beat Valpo for the second straight time, got the ball right back on another Drew Dawson interception.

The turnover led to a Stokes 36-yard field goal with 9:57 remaining in the game. Stokes had missed a 41-yarder, but a running-into-the-kicker penalty gave the freshman another chance.

Aldridge finished with 108 yards on 11 carries.

“I thought our kids played really well tonight,” Yelton said. “It’s about putting things together at the right time, and that’s what we did.”
Valpo, which was shut out 10-0 in the season opener against Penn, was blanked for the second time in 2005.

Vikings coach Mark Hoffman said he didn’t know who would start at quarterback next week, adding that “there is no controversy.”

“We told our kids we’re going to give everyone a shot,” Hoffman said. “(Merrillville’s) defense is tenacious, and we’re not able to throw. We’re not at that level now.”

No mention of Larimore but his team notched another win last night...

ST. JOHN | It sure is nice to have a stud running back heading into a rainy game on a soggy field.

Merrillville's James Aldridge carried the offensive load as the Pirates scored twice in the first quarter Friday against Lake Central. The Notre Dame-bound back gained 59 yards on six first-quarter carries in Merrillville's 28-0 win against Lake Central.
Not to be outdone, the Pirates' defense held Lake Central to four first downs total.

Merrillville's first score came after a botched Lake Cental punt snap in the wet conditions, which gave Merrillville the ball on the Indians' 11-yard line. Quarterback Evan Parker then hit Anthony Curry on a 9-yard scoring pass.

"James opens up the passing game," Parker said of Aldridge. "We always have the pass available with James in the backfield."

The Pirates' defense then scored on the ensuing Lake Central possession.

Junior defensive back Drew Dawson intercepted P.J. Gbur's pass and raced 30 yards for a touchdown.

"Our 'D' did a whale of a job," said Merrillville coach Jeff Yelton. "They controlled the game and gave us great field position."

In the second quarter, Pirates sophomore Carlos Campos made a beautiful catch on a 33-yard Parker pass while falling into the end zone. The highlight-reel reception gave Merrillville a 21-point lead.

"You've got to be able to throw the ball in October and November," Yelton said. "(Parker) did a nice job of passing in tough conditions tonight."

The final score of the game came on a 20-yard run by Parker, who finished with 71 rushing yards.

"Coach told me, if the pass ain't there, take off running," Parker said.

Merrillville (6-2,4-2) and Lake Central (2-6,0-6) then fought to a scoreless second half.

"I'm proud of my kids," Lake Central coach Bill Melby said. "A team with lesser character would have folded up at halftime."

Senior Ken Cook led the Indians' defense with six tackles.

That article also says he may end up strictly on the wrestling mat in college. Hopefully if he does decide to play football that the OSU representation at the IU game put our fans into perspective for him. We got the O-H I-O goin around the stadium quite a few times.

not sure if this was posted before or not, but he is the number one ranked heavyweight in the nation by USA wrestling...
Wow that is one heck of an achievement. Dexter has the potential to be really special in both football in wrestling. I just hope he chooses to take his chances in being special at tOSU.

I don't think Larimore has yet made up his mind about playing both.It sounds as though Larimore would like to wrestle and play football. I can't think of a better school to do that at than tOSU. JT is very supportive of 2 sport participants. OTOH, Larimore also seems skeptical of his ability to compete in both sports. In this, I think he is showing some maturity. Playing football and wrestling has been done in the past, but it has become increasingly less frequent. Big time football has become a year around activity as has wrestling at the B10 level. On top of that, the top weight for the heavies has been capped at 285 (used to be unlimited), which really crimps the style of the OL/DL types who are most likely to be playing both sports at the collegiate level.

Larimore's case is fascinating, though. He goes about 265/70 on a pretty good frame. He likely would RS in football his frosh year, allowing him to build up to around 285 for his wrestling in the winter. After wrestling, he could bulk up to 285 plus and reasonably cut back down to 285 for wrestling. However, if he plays football until early January, then has to get in wrestling shape (trust me, much more rigorous than football shape) and cut the weight, he might not be available until February. To provide some perspective, the last dual meet scheduled for tOSU this year is 2/17/06.

So, he is probably right that it would be very, very tough to compete in both sports at the collegiate level. I suppose the deciding points will be how much affection he has for each sport and what, if any, aspirations he may have for a shot at being a professional athlete. From what I have read, I think it is a very real possibility that he goes with wrestling, assuming his offers for wrestling are for a full ride (wrestling can offer partial scholarships and most wrestlers on scholarship do NOT get full rides).

Dexter is considering tOSU, Michigan, and Indiana. He only wants to play defense and likes tOSU's attacking style as coompared to Michigan's read and react D-line. Dexter is waiting for his official visits to see how he fits with the team and coaches.
