DT Dre'Mont Jones (Seattle Seahawks)

What Brought Dre’Mont Jones Back to Ohio State?

Dre’Mont Jones could have entered the 2018 NFL Draft this month and begun his career as a professional football player. As an early-round selection, he would have been able to sign a contract that changed his life forever.

Instead, he chose to return to Ohio State for his fourth — and likely final — season as a Buckeye.

When Jones arrived at OSU in 2015, he was still recovering from a knee injury he suffered during his senior season of high school basketball. He redshirted as a true freshman, but then stepped into a starting role as a redshirt freshman. He was outstanding and one of the most active defensive tackles in the nation.

After the season, Jones’ name began popping up in 2018 NFL Draft talk, and it wasn’t too soon after that Jones began thinking about the next level.

“I think about it every day,” Jones said last week. “Ever since it was first brought up to me. Whether I say I don’t want to talk about it right now, but it’s still on my mind. It’s hard not to pay attention to that.”

Despite it never straying far from his mind, Jones put the NFL off, and he did it for a number of reasons.

“I feel like I can maximize myself and this team, that’s why,” he said.

Jones’ desire to help the team in 2018 melds perfectly with an opportunity to raise his own stock. It wasn’t an easy decision, but he believes it was the right one.

“I already had an idea around January 10 of what I was going to do,” he said. “My birthday is January 5th and I kind of just made a decision there. I talked to my parents to see how they felt, talked to my brothers to see how they felt, and I just called it.”

Five takeaways from Ohio State’s spring game

Meyer said Dre’Mont Jones had best spring of all Buckeyes

3. Best spring: No one performed better in the spring than defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones, Meyer said. He raved about his play after the game, and another improved defensive lineman, Chase Young, said Jones just refused to be blocked in practices.

“He might get seven plays in practice,” Young said, “and he might get five sacks out of those seven plays.”

DRE'MONT JONES IMPRESSED URBAN MEYER MORE THAN ANY OTHER OHIO STATE PLAYER THIS SPRING

92518_h.jpg

Dre’Mont Jones was already one of Ohio State’s best players entering this year’s spring practices.

According to his head coach and defensive coordinator, he’s even better now.

"Dre’Mont Jones has been elite," Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said on last week’s Big Ten spring teleconference. "Even better than he was last year."

Following Saturday’s spring game, Meyer took that praise even further.

"The guy that has probably had the best spring of anybody on our team this spring is Dre’Mont Jones," Meyer said. "He was outstanding this spring."

Coming off of his redshirt sophomore season last year, Jones was widely expected to enter the 2018 NFL draft, for which he was projected to be an early-round pick. Instead, however, Jones opted to remain a Buckeye for one more year – a decision that puts Jones on track to leave Ohio State with his degree and gives him another shot to compete for a championship, but also gives him the potential to elevate his game to a level that could make him an even higher draft pick in 2019.

So far, Meyer says that’s exactly what he’s done.

"For a guy to come back, when a lot of people thought he should leave; a lot of times we have to deal with whether it be effort issues, or 'Why am I doing this?' issues," Meyer said. "Zero. And that’s a credit to his family and (defensive line coach) Larry Johnson. He had a great spring. And if he continues his development, he could be one of the best in America at what he does."

Dre’Mont Jones Keeps Getting Better

J.K.-Dobbins-DreMont-Jones-Ohio-State-Football-Buckeyes.jpg

Nick Bosa had been telling anyone who would listen that Dre’Mont Jones was going to return for a fourth season with the Buckeyes. Jones, however, was never so sure.

Heading into the 2017 season, Jones’ name was already populating mock drafts. Even though he didn’t put up the statistics in 2017 that he did in 2016, he was still seen by most as a late first-round draft pick.

Defensive line coach Larry Johnson and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer were hopeful that Dre’Mont Jones would return, but their pessimism would sometimes get the best of them.

Rather than take the plunge and head to the NFL, however, Jones decided to return for one more season. The plan was two-fold, involving his ability to make the Buckeyes better and also to improve his draft stock.

Bosa never had a doubt that Jones would return, but that doesn’t mean he’s taking the credit.

“That’s all Coach J though,” Bosa said this spring. “I definitely let him know what I wanted, but Coach J really sat down with him and got him to figure out what’s best for him. I’m glad he’s back.”

What is best for Jones is also best for Ohio State football. He is going to be on the field a whole lot more this season, and everyone will get a good, long look at what he brings to a defense.

“He’s going to get to play third downs, which is huge for him stock-wise and just getting better as a player,” Bosa said. “He takes all of the reps he can in one-on-ones, but actually getting out on the game field and pass rushing is a whole different thing. It’s going to be awesome to watch him.”

Standing in front of reporters after Saturday’s spring game, Meyer confirmed Bosa’s prediction.

“The guy that’s probably had the best spring of anybody on our team is Dre’Mont Jones,” he said. “He was outstanding this spring.”

It wasn’t just Meyer and Bosa who noticed it, either.

“He wasn’t getting blocked at all,” said sophomore defensive end Chase Young. “Like in the spring, he might get seven plays and he might get five sacks out of seven plays. So Dre’Mont really doesn’t like getting blocked. So I think this year — Dre’Mont has been good every year he played, but this year it might be something different.”

SKULL SESSION: WHY DRE'MONT JONES RETURNED TO OHIO STATE, DAMON ARNETTE'S ATTENTION TO DETAIL, AND JOHN SIMON SWITCHES POSITIONS

WHY DRE'MONT RETURNED.
Dre'Mont Jones could be a millionaire right now. Instead, he chose to return to Ohio State to perfect his craft. In the end, it had a lot to do with his need for personal growth and the brutality of the position he plays.

From Tim May of The Columbus Dispatch:

“The physical aspects, I feel like I could have done well, football-wise,” Jones said. “But mentally I felt like I wasn’t there. I felt like I needed the extra maturity for my mind, and then your body will come along with it. ... I just felt like I needed an extra year really to just grow. D-tackle is a very taxing position. I need to develop my body as much as I can.”

That’s where things grew interesting, as far as coach Urban Meyer, defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and defensive line coach Larry Johnson were concerned. The 15 days of spring practice were their barometer.

“The guy who probably had the best spring of anybody on our team is Dre’Mont Jones,” Meyer said. “He was outstanding. For a guy to come back when a lot of people thought he should leave, a lot of times we have to deal with, whether it be effort issues or ‘Why am I doing this?’ issues — zero. And that’s a credit to his family and (coach) Larry Johnson. He had a great spring.”

Props to Jones for realizing the need for personal growth and for taking a risk to return to the local team. Some fans think that's the safe play. That's not the case, even with NCAA insurance policies.

Sometimes players come back and don't improve. The good news with Jones is the chance of him not improving is less than 1%. If he already made that leap, there isn't going to be an offensive line in the country that can block the Buckeye defensive line for four quarters.

DRE'MONT JONES EXPECTED TO PLAY EXTENDED REPS IN 2018 AFTER CHOOSING TO RETURN TO OHIO STATE FOR ONE LAST SEASON

94610_h.jpg

Ohio State lost a plethora of talent to the NFL draft in late April when the likes of Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard and Jalyn Holmes were all selected by NFL teams to take their game to the professional ranks.

Dre'Mont Jones could have easily added his name to that list, but instead chose to return to Columbus for the 2018 season, a campaign that figures to feature Jones in a more prominent role.

In previous seasons, Jones was often replaced on third down in favor of a third defensive end in Ohio State's "Rushmen" package. With a trio of veterans gone to the NFL, Jones is now expected to stay on the field in third down situations, something Urban Meyer said Tuesday he is excited about.

"He would come out last year on third downs and I am sure he is not coming out now," Meyer said at Big Ten Media Day. "You see him walking around here, it is as good as he has ever looked. He is a grown man."

Last year, Jones tallied just 20 total tackles, missing two games due to a serious gash suffered from a locker room incident midseason. He recorded just one sack in limited opportunities, a number that figures to change this season, assuming he gets those extended reps on passing downs.

Improving his game in an overall sense was one of the main reasons the Cleveland native returned to school, but also, his decision was influenced by his desire to earn his degree before moving on to the NFL. A member of the 2015 class, Jones is entering his fourth season, putting him on the traditional path to graduate.

Jones said Tuesday that he believes he has more room to grow both on and off the field, despite being projected as a high-round draft pick after the 2017 campaign.

"Football-wise, I wanted to hone into my skills," Jones said of his decision to return to school. "I feel like I have much more to grow as a person and as an athlete.

"I am very excited. Who doesn't want to be on the field? That is my hunger. This is what I want to do."

After Putting NFL on Hold, No Agendas for Dre’Mont Jones, Just Football

Most defensive tackles don’t have an NFL decision to make after their third season on a college campus. As anyone inside the Ohio State football facilities will tell you, however, Dre’Mont Jones isn’t most defensive tackles.

Jones was projected by some as a late first-rounder, despite playing just two seasons on the field after missing his true freshman season due to a torn ACL. This is also a player who is still relatively new to the sport, having only played since his junior season in high school.

Of course, that also gives an idea as to his potential when the quickness with which he picked up the sport is considered.

Now, however, that potential will be on display more than it ever has been before. Jones will no longer be replaced on passing downs and he will finally get to show the complete defensive tackle that he is.

To say he is looking forward to it would be an understatement.

“I’m very excited,” he said of his coming increase in snaps. “Who doesn’t want to be on the field? That’s my hunger. That’s my thrive. This is what I want to do. This is what I do.”

The increased reps were one reason why Jones chose to return, but that wasn’t the only reason. Jones knew there were still improvements to be made, and not just in one or two specific areas.

“I feel like a lot of players come back and they feel like they have a certain agenda,” he said. “That wasn’t my mindset. I watched film. I improved my routine before practice. Stretching. Eating healthier, that’s what really helped me.”

Jones did admit there was a level of difficulty in giving up Cheetos, but the changes that he has made have brought significant results. Urban Meyer said recently that Jones may have had the best spring of anybody on the roster.

“I really want to thank [strength] Coach [Phil] Matusz because he really was trying to tell me early on in my career, and I didn’t really pay attention,” Jones said. “Then this year I was like, ‘You know what, maybe I need to try something different to enhance my game.’”
