DT Johnathan "Big Hank" Hankins (Dallas Cowboys)

Here are the Buckeyes with the best chance at having their name called during the draft:

Johnathan Hankins, 6-foot-3, 320 pounds, defensive tackle, junior

11977336-mmmain.jpg

Overview: Whether he was called "Big John" or "Big Hank," Hankins was certainly big. He found some playing time as a freshman and then had his best season in 2011 as a sophomore with 67 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss and three sacks, earning First Team All-Big Honorable Mention as the big clog in the middle of Ohio State's defensive line. Last season, he had 55 tackles, four tackles for a loss and a sack and was named First Team All-Big Ten.

NFLDraftScout.com overall rankings/projections: Hankins is ranked 28th overall and is the fifth-ranked defensive tackle. He carries a first-round grade.

What they're saying: Hankins has excellent feet for the position with a very good first step and get-off burst to knife through the line of scrimmage. ... Fluid and rangy, dropping in coverage at times. ... Versatile, seeing playing time all over the defensive line. ... Tough run defender with very good instincts and awareness. ... Has extremely strong hands to secure tackles and finish plays. ... Relies too much on his upper-body strength at times and needs to play with consistent leverage. ... Doesn't always play smart and commits several penalties. ... Tends to wear down throughout the course of a game and gives streaky effort.

NFLDraftScout.com player comparison: Brandon Mebane, defensive tackle, Seattle Seahawks.

Hankins:

Hankins has the size, power and quickness to be a dominant NFL defensive tackle. His biggest concerns are his motor and stamina, as he tended to disappear late in games during his OSU career.

Because of that, scouts will be looking for Hankins to finish strong through his combine workout, and will assess whether his performance drops as the day goes along, to make an evaluation on his stamina level. Additionally, scouts will be focused on how Hankins? athleticism stacks up against some of the draft?s other top nose tackles, including Utah?s Star Lotulelei and Alabama?s Jesse Williams.

Hankins, Lotulelei and Williams are all projected to be first-round picks in the 2013 NFL draft.

Ohio State DT Johnathan Hankins measured 6-foot-2 7/8 and 320 pounds at Saturday's NFL Combine weigh-in.
It's just a shade shy of Hankins' 6-foot-3, 322-pound listing by Ohio State. After totaling 14 tackles for loss and three sacks as a sophomore in 2011, Hankins' production plummeted to 5.0 TFLs and 1.0 sacks as a junior. He offers the talent of a first-round pick, but obviously has some questions to answer. Feb 23

Johnathan Hankins at the NFL Combine 2013- CPD video interview 2 23 13

Big Hank ready to do big things at the combine- video interview Buckeye Grove

Hankins had second thoughts about leaving

Though Johnathan Hankins is projected to be a first-round NFL draft pick, the defensive tackle acknowledged having mixed feelings about leaving Ohio State with a year of eligibility remaining.

?I had a few second thoughts,? Hankins said today at the NFL combine.

But he talked with family, teammates and coaches, he believes he?s made the right decision. Hankins said that when he informed Urban Meyer of his decision, the OSU coach ?was kind of surprised a little bit, but he knew I was thinking about it. He?s supported me 100 percent of the way.?
Hankins said Meyer might have been surprised ?because he only had one year with me and I?m sure he wanted more. We had established a good relationship. Without him, I wouldn?t be where I am now. I was blessed that he came to Ohio State.?

Hankins said he has a minor pectoral muscle injury and won?t attempt the bench-press drill here.

?Just a precaution,? he said. ?I want to be 100 percent when I do it.?

Johnathan Hankins discusses presence of Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel at Ohio State
By Jeff Howe / Boston Herald

Ohio State defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins said assistant coach Mike Vrabel played a key role in his development in college.

"He's brought a lot of energy to the D-line, a lot of technique to the standpoint, just use your hands," Hankins said. "He stresses just using your extension, making plays without using your body, using your arms, using your hands. I got a good technical (lesson) from him. Just his history of what he has done, playing at Ohio State, playing in the NFL, playing with the Patriots, I try to build off what he's done and incorporate that into my game."

As for the Bill Belichick-Urban Meyer connection, Hankins said he hasn't seen Belichick around campus any more than other teams or coaches. Meyer probably could have charged Belichick rent for the time he used to spend at Florida. But then again, this is Meyer's first full offseason at Ohio State, so Belichick might start to show up a bit more these days.

Hankins also said he has not met with the Patriots at this point.

Former Buckeyes? defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins is widely considered to be OSU?s best draft prospect and a likely first-round selection in April?s NFL Draft. Hankins participated in just three drills on Monday, posting a 5.31-second 40-yard dash, a 26-inch vertical jump and a 104-inch broad jump.
Hankins confirmed on Saturday that he would opt to delay his bench press until OSU?s March 8 Pro Day.

High school teammates William Gholston (Michigan State), Johnathan Hankins (Ohio State) reconnect at combine
Kyle Meinke | [email protected] By Kyle Meinke | [email protected]
on February 28, 2013

There was a time when William Gholston and Johnathan Hankins wanted to attend Michigan State together.

But only one of the Detroit Southeastern products made it there. While Gholston landed at Michigan State, Hankins wound up at Big Ten rival Ohio State.

Both blossomed into premier defensive linemen, and elected to leave school after their junior seasons. Split by college, they've reunited as they go through the NFL Draft process.

"That's my best friend, man," Gholston said recently at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "We've been kicking it and chilling the whole time. We're both from Detroit, both from the same high school. It'd be crazy if we played for the same NFL team.

"He wanted to go to Michigan State too, but there was some stuff that went on with that. But I'm glad that he got in the situation he's in."

Gholston and Hankins likely will be drafted during the first three rounds of April's draft. Hankins, a possible first-rounder at defensive tackle, likely will be selected first.

But Gholston, a 6-foot-6, 281-pound defensive end who is oozing potential, won't be far behind. Questions about his consistency continue to persist, and he didn't turn in a strong all-around combine, but figures to still be selected in the first half of the draft.

And when the going gets tough, he has the 6-foot-2, 320-pound Hankins to lean on.

"He's like my brother," Hankins said. "We're both doing the dream, doing the stuff that we want to do. So, I'm happy."

Ohio State players finish Pro Day
Thirteen players from Ohio State's undefeated 2012 season worked out for NFL scouts this morning at OSU's Pro Day, and some Buckeyes appeared to have helped themselves.

There are no "official" statistics kept as each team records its own times.

Defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins and offensive tackle Reid Fragel did only limited drills today after doing the full set at the combine.

Hankins, OSU?s standout defensive tackle the last three years, only did position drills after working out at the NFL combine.

?I just wanted to show them with my position drills that I can move my feet and work my hands,? Hankins said. ?I feel like that is what I did today. I felt like I performed well there and I was just going to come in here and work on the position drills.

?It was cool. At the combine, it was probably as intense as ever. But being back home and doing the drills, I was quite comfortable.?

Asked what he thinks teams think of him, he said, ?Great guy with character and a great team guy and I?m a great football player.

?I feel like what I did on the combine was good. If you watch the tape from here, you can see I can play the game.?

Hankins was asked where he would fit in an NFL defensive scheme.

?I feel like I could play either in a 3-4 or a 4-3. I?m a defensive tackle, but I think I could play anywhere on the line.?

Hankins was once projected as a first-round pick, but has fallen on some mock draft boards into the second.

?I expect to be a first rounder,? he said. ?That?s one of my goals. If it happens, it happens. People have their opinions and what they think. But if you sit there and watch the film, you can see it.?

Johnathan Hankins, OL (6-3 1/4, 320 pounds) ? Considered a top-12 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Hankins reminds people of Cleveland Browns DL Phillip Taylor. What hurt his performance during the season was that he seldom came off the field. It?s hard for big guys like this to play 65 or 70 snaps a game. Hankins opted to only take part in selected drills coming off his effort in the NFL Scouting Combine.

Jonathan Hankins/DT: Participated only in position drills. Tipped the scale in the low 320’s. Looked solid moving around the field yet not very explosive.
