He can anchor both and cog lanes against the run.

Chiefs took Poe last year, I can't see them making the move on Big Hank this year.

Oakland is really in play here though.

I know of an NCAA deadline to declare for the draft, but nothing about backing out of the draft. I did not think there was such a deadline.

There is a deadline, or everyone would declare for the draft and then return a year later.

If Johnathan Hankins was deeply disappointed in not being a first-round selection on Thursday in the NFL draft, he didn?t show it, especially after he took a call from the New York Giants in middle of the second round last night.
?I?m very excited. My family is very excited,? said the former Ohio State defensive tackle, who spent the past two nights watching the draft at his family?s home in Detroit. ?I?m just ready to go to work right now so we can win the Super Bowl. I?m real pumped.

?I?ve been working hard for this moment ? and I felt like this was a good pick for me and I?m ready to work hard and keep going.?

Hankins has been the only Buckeye taken through three rounds of the draft, with the final four today. Defensive lineman John Simon ? the Big Ten defensive player of the year ? right tackle Reid Fragel, tight end Jake Stoneburner, linebacker Etienne Sabino and perhaps fullback/linebacker Zach Boren are expected to get calls today.

Hankins was the only of those draft-eligible Buckeyes who left school with a year of eligibility remaining. He announced his decision in December, and draft analysts projected him as a top-15 pick. Then came questions about his stamina and a fall-off in production, and he slid from sure first-round pick to the fringe.

?We had him identified as a first-round guy,? said Marc Ross, the Giants? director of college scouting after New York used the 17th pick in the second round and 49th overall on Hankins. ?Some people might have been scared off by his lack of sack production (one in 2012) ? and some I?ve heard, ?his stamina.? ?OK, the guy is 320 pounds and he plays every snap. So if he wears down at the end of a 60-play game, I could understand that. You have to look at his body of work, dig deep into who he is. He?s a great kid. He loves football. He?s going to work his butt off. So those concerns that others might have, we didn?t have.?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? The New York Giants are going big in the draft.

A day after taking offensive tackle Justin Pugh in the first round, the Giants put pounds on their disappointing defensive line by selecting run-stopping Ohio State tackle Johnathan Hankins in the second round and pass-rushing end Damontre Moore of Texas A&M in the third.

It's a clear sign the Giants are intent on returning to old-time smash-mouth football, where games are won in the trenches, running the football, stopping the run and getting after the opposing quarterback.

"A lot of big guys went early and in the league you've got to have big guys to win," general manager Jerry Reese said. "If you don't have big guys, it's hard to win in this league."

Coach Tom Coughlin also knows that winning in the NFC East comes from stopping the run and putting pressure on the quarterback. The Giants didn't do that consistently against Dallas, Philadelphia and division champion Washington, which was led by the mobile Robert Griffin III.

"That is where it starts ? up front," Coughlin said. "You have to continue to develop and build. Be strong up there ? competitive. We have good players here. We have just added some players to the mix and hopefully the competition will make our team better."

Ohio State Football Head Coach Urban Meyer hsn't much of a fan of rotating his defensive linemen too much.

And it's that approach that New York Giants' second round draft pick Johnathan Hankins - "Big Hank" to his friends and future teammates-said helped prepare him for his upcoming new life in the NFL.

"I love the game and I really don't want to come off the field," Hankins said during a conference call with the New York media on day 2 of the NFL draft. "So I feel like I took the challenge of playing all the snaps, and I feel like I did pretty good at it."

The numbers would appear to back up Hankins' opinion. He started 25 of the 38 games he played in for the Buckeyes, recording 138 total tackles (58 solo). While he only managed f5.0 sacks for minus 27 yards, he did accumulate 16.5 tackles for a loss for minus-55 yards during his three-year career.

"I feel like being the way I am, being 325 lbs., you don't see many big guys running side to side making plays and just playing all positions on defensive front," he said.

Although Hankins probably won't be an every down player for the Giants-he'll likely cut his teeth in obvious running down situations--he believes his transition to the pro level will be a smooth one thanks to the lessons he learned at Ohio State.

"It helped me tremendously from just a physical aspect to my weight to getting me stronger," he said of his collegiate career. "(Also) when it came to the game and just watching film and knowing what offenses are going to do before the play is going to happen. Just the tradition there in getting guys to the league is a great asset for me (and) prepared me well."

I think technically you can "just talk" to an agent; however, "if a player makes any kind of agreement, oral or written, to be represented by a player agent, or accepts anything from an agent or anyone working for an agent, the NCAA will void all his remaining eligibility".

Which probably means (to be on the safe side) if you want to keep your eligibility you better not talk to one either.

Everyone wants the new guy to look the part on the first day of a new job, but when Johnathan Hankins arrives on May 10 for the Giants rookie mini-camp, prepare to be underwhelmed.

?No, you?re not going to be real impressed,?? Luke Fickell, Ohio State?s co-defensive coordinator, yesterday told The Post.

Not impressed with the second-round draft pick?

?He?s not going to have veins in his arms or look like somebody where you?re going to go ?Oh [expletive],? ?? Fickell said. ?He?s going to have a gigantic smile on his face, he?s going to be happy-go-lucky but his body is not going to impress everybody. It?s not going to be ?Oh [expletive], there?s Justin Tuck.? Not going to see the veins bursting out. Like abs, everybody?s got ?em, some are just covered up. His are covered up.??

What we have here is a roly-poly rookie known as ?Big Hank?? by everyone at Ohio State, a jumbo-sized defensive tackle the Giants believe can consume opposing running games with his girth. When Marc Ross, the Giants? director of college scouting, described Hankins as a ?wide-body?? he spread his arms out to his sides to indicate a rather large bottom. Based on ability, plenty of scouts had Hankins as a first-round talent. But that body, oh, that body.

?That?s one of those reasons he ends up where he is, there are some negative things,?? said Fickell, who served as Ohio State?s interim head coach in 2011 after Jim Tressel was suspended and eventually resigned. ?He looks fat. He looks chubby. Yeah, he?s not a great-bodied guy.??
