Pendleton's Michael Hill keeps his word and signs with Ohio State

PENDLETON ? Last summer, Pendleton coach Paul Sutherland tried to talk defensive tackle and the state's top recruit Michael Hill out of committing to Ohio State.
It wasn't that Sutherland wanted Hill, who Rivals.com named the No. 1 recruit in South Carolina, closer to home or that he had add any affection for one of the in-state schools.
"My biggest thing to Michael was if we commit, that's it. Your word is going to mean something," Sutherland said. "If you change to somewhere else, that's on you. Once he made his mind up, met with him a long time, basically tried to talk him out of it because I wanted him to know the seriousness of it."
At Pendleton High School on Wednesday, Hill stuck to his commitment and signed a official National Letter of Intent to play for coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, who he rooted for growing up.
"I've been waiting so long to sign this paper," said Hill, who's been committed to Ohio State since last June. "I didn't want to make a decision until I knew 100 percent where I wanted to go. That's what I did."
Hill faxed his letter to Ohio State early Wednesday and waited until noon to announce it to a crowd of family, students, teachers and coaches at the school's auditorium.
"I'm really proud of him for one thing: When he made up his mind, his word was gold," Sutherland said. "He stuck with his commitment."
