DT Ryan "Big Grease" Pickett (Super Bowl Champion)

Defensive end Ryan Pickett re-injured his troublesome right ankle, and while Pickett?s availability for the team?s next game (Nov. 21 at Minnesota) is unclear, coach Mike McCarthy said the medical staff and coaches ?don?t feel that it was any worse than the initial injury.?

Pickett first sprained the ankle Oct. 10 at Washington, missed the Oct. 17 game against Miami, left the Oct. 24 game against Minnesota after seven plays when he re-injured it, missed the Oct. 31 game against the New York Jets, and then returned to action in Sunday night?s 45-7 win over Dallas before getting hurt again with 7:22 left in the first half.

Green Bay Packers Ryan Pickett: Super Bowl Wasn?t A Fun Experience At All
by TMR Newswire January - 26 - 2011

Green-Bay-Packers-Ryan-Pickett-Super-Bowl-Wasnt-A-Fun-Experience-At-All-150x150.jpg

Q. Ryan, you?ve won a Super Bowl before. What advice are you giving to the younger guys on this team?

RYAN PICKETT: Oh, I haven?t won one.

Q. Gotten to one, sorry.

RYAN PICKETT: Gotten to one. The advice to them is enjoy this time, but stay focused on the game because I went and lost and that wasn?t a fun experience at all. As a matter of fact, I?m still sick to this day that I got there and lost. So just try to pass small things like that to them.

Q. What?s on your checklist this week before you get on the plane?

RYAN PICKETT: What?s on my checklist?

Q. Yes. How much do you want to have done before you go down there?

RYAN PICKETT: I mean, that?s why we?ve gotten all the business taken care of now. Coaches, they made us get our tickets done and take care of our families and stuff these last two days. So tomorrow and on, from that point, it?s going to be all Pittsburgh and all football.
So when we get on the plane, we?re already in our game plan. We?ll be ready for Pittsburgh.

Super Bowl: Pickett isn't taking game for granted

Ryan Pickett went to a Super Bowl as a rookie from OSU nine years ago but hadn't returned until now.

Ryan Pickett is back in the Super Bowl, just like old times, but this time he wants a new memory.

"I want a Super Bowl ring," Pickett said.

The jovial tackle was riding high as a rookie in the 2001 season. After leaving Ohio State with a year of eligibility remaining, he was a first-round draft pick of the St.Louis Rams, who were playing for their second championship in three years.

He had fun that week in New Orleans, he said, maybe too much fun. The highly favored Rams lost to New England on the last play, a field goal by Adam Viniateri, but Pickett figured there would be plenty more chances to grab a ring.

"I thought I was going to be there every year," he said. "The first year you're in the league you're going to the Super Bowl and you're thinking, 'Man, this is pretty easy. I'm going to play in a few of these.'

"Then reality sets. Here it is nine years later, and I'm going to my second one. It's hard to do. Everything that has to happen for you and your team to get there, it's hard."

Big man finally back in big game
By MARTIN FENNELLY | The Tampa Tribune
Published: February 5, 2011

LAS COLINAS, Texas - The big man, 340 pounds of him, laughed with everything he had.

Zephyrhills native Ryan Pickett told the story about the winter of 2006, his first arctic snowstorm in Green Bay after signing as a free agent with the town's football franchise, the Packers, to play defensive end.

"I had bought a big snow blower," Pickett said. "I was going to be mean, man. I'm going to be into this."

He lasted 20 minutes.

"My fingers were numb. I told my wife, 'Let's call somebody.' I can battle 300-pound guys, but not the cold. I gave the snow blower away."

Naturally, there's snow on the ground in Dallas this week for Super Bowl XLV. Pickett's wide smile said he didn't mind, as he is downright toasty over finally being back on football's biggest stage, his Packers against the Steelers.

In February 2002, Pickett played in Super Bowl XXXVI as a rookie with the St. Louis Rams. This week, he has told his Packers teammates to not take anything for granted.

"When you're a rookie, you think it's easy," the 10-year NFL veteran said. "I definitely thought that with the Rams. We had a great team. We breezed through the season. I thought we'd be there every year."

St. Louis was a heavy favorite over the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. They lost on a field goal as time expired.

"That was hard to overcome," Pickett said.

He added, "I haven't watched a Super Bowl since I lost."

Pickett played at Zephyrhills High School, which retired his number 79 a few years ago. He starred at Ohio State, too, before being a first-round pick in the 2001 NFL draft. He still doesn't have that championship ring.

"Nine years later and I'm just getting back," Pickett said.

Ryan Pickett: Made the shift from NT to LE without griping and became more comfortable and effective as the season went along. For the fourth time in his five seasons he led the D-line in tackles per snap. His mark of one tackle every 6.97 snaps was a career high. Over a stretch of five games near midseason, he missed three games in their entirety and played just nine snaps in the other two. Nicknamed "Grease," Pickett is almost impossible to move. He isn't as athletic as he was as the Rams' first-round draft choice in 2001 but does have a knack for reading blocking combinations and finding the ball. Unselfish team leader. Signed a fat contract in March but did whatever he could to justify the front office's faith in him. Grade: B.

Ryan Pickett: Your Ultra-Conservative Guide

ryanpickett.jpg

Would like to be your moral compass.

I always find it odd when I see someone who isn?t old, rich and white latch onto conservative political causes.

Of course, there?s a certain theory that sums things up nicely ? you?re only a Democrat until you start making a lot of money, unless you live in California.

Unfortunately, that?s not the case here because this isn?t about taxes. Green Bay Packers defensive end Ryan Pickett isn?t just a Republican, he?s ultra-conservative.

He?s a member of the morality police.

Not exactly what you?d expect of a large black man from Florida. Ryan Pickett is not your average large black man from Florida, though.

Back in January, it was revealed that Pickett sits on the board of directors of xxxchurch.com, an anti-porn organization that annually broadcasts their smut-is-bad message to hundreds of churches around the country.

The Green Bay Packers are contemplating a change to their base defense that could benefit former Ohio State player Ryan Pickett. The 340-pound end would move to nose tackle, where he started from 2006 to ?09 and where he has been more effective, and B.J. Raji would have more freedom as a one-gap player in the spot previously occupied by Cullen Jenkins.

?I love it,? Raji told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. ?The coaches are giving it a shot. It?s our job, particularly me and Pick, to prove them right. We?ve done a good job at practice.?

For Pickett, 31, the move to nose tackle is seen as one that could resurrect his career. His diminished range wouldn?t be as noticeable and his block-eating qualities more pronounced.

?I know he took one for the team playing end,? Raji said. ?But some techniques at the nose he does play better than me.?
