2018 FIVE-STAR DEFENSIVE TACKLE TARON VINCENT COMMITS TO OHIO STATE

Ohio State has long been considered the leader for Vincent thanks to his relationship with defensive line coach Larry Johnson. He hadn't been on campus since last summer, which allowed Florida State to make up significant ground in his recruitment.

Vincent said the Buckeyes and Seminoles were dead even following his trip to Tallahassee for Junior Day last month, but his two-day visit to Columbus this week made all the difference.

Vincent becomes the fifth member of Ohio State's 2018 recruiting class, joining five-star quarterback Emory Jones, five-star safety Jaiden Woodbey, four-star running back Brian Snead and four-star all-purpose back Jaelen Gill.

WHAT TARON VINCENT'S COMMITMENT MEANS FOR OHIO STATE'S 2018 RECRUITING CLASS

Finding the right fit for your college football program isn't just about what happens on the field, but off it as well. Today, Ohio State added a key piece. How will that commitment impact the Buckeyes?

Ohio State landed a commitment this evening from one of the most dominant players in the country when Bradenton, Florida, IMG Academy five-star defensive tackle Taron Vincent pledged his services to the Buckeyes following a two-day unofficial visit.

Let's take a look at what Vincent — the No. 14 prospect overall in the Class of 2018 — brings to Columbus.

ON THE FIELD

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound Vincent, though not the one-technique defensive tackle glaringly absent from Ohio State's roster, uses his strength and explosiveness to be disruptive in the trenches. He has excellent vision, uses his leverage well and reads plays quickly to stop the run.

Those skills allow Vincent to simply overpower most offensive linemen at the high school level, but he must continue to work on his technique and go-to moves if he wants put pressure on the quarterback in the passing game.

Vincent, who transferred from Baltimore, Maryland, Gilman after his sophomore season, finished his junior campaign with 92 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, eight quarterback hurries and five sacks. His efforts helped the Ascenders capture their second-consecutive undefeated season.

Vincent has message for Buckeye fans, goes in-depth on decision

Five-star defensive tackle Taron Vincent has a message for Buckeye fans and goes in-depth on his decision to play for Ohio State over Florida State.

Bradenton (Fla.) IMG defensive tackle Taron Vincent committed to Ohio State over scholarship offers from Florida State and many others. As happy as Buckeye Nation is over his decision, Vincent may be just as happy. And he has a message for Ohio State fans.

“Thank you for accepting me with open arms,” Vincent began. “I’m very happy. It’s like a big weight being lifted off my shoulders. Now I can just concentrate on my senior (football) season.”

Vincent told Bucknuts in February that he had narrowed his decision down to Ohio State and Florida State. After he visited the Seminoles over a month ago, some felt Florida State held the lead and some felt it would be Vincent’s eventual destination.

“No, they weren’t in the lead,” Vincent said. “I would say it was even going into my Ohio State visit (March 29-30). It was close. Both have great programs. My relationship with both staffs is good. But I just followed my heart to Ohio State. A day after my (Ohio State) visit after I sat down with my parents I knew it was Ohio State.”

So, what was the determining factor in Vincent’s decision?

“I sat down with my parents and our family made the decision,” Vincent said. “It’s the best decision for me. The plan they have for me just fits me best. My four years there they will be helping me while I’m in college and my life after football.”

So, is there any chance Vincent changes his mind?

“No, I’m committed to Ohio State,” Vincent said. “I’m not looking around.”
