DT Tommy Togiai (Barrel Strong, Cleveland Browns)

Every time I get concerned about next year I look at the next class(es) and rest easily. May be some fall off from Young, but at this point, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if there isn’t.

The more we can get some of these guys playing time (see Maryland and Rutgers) the better they all will be next year. There will be a drop off at DE with Chase leaving but we have some solid guys in Smith, Harrison, Baptiste, Friday and Potter.

What we WILL miss is the veteran leadership we now have along the DL and secondary positions. I see Browning, Borland and Werner returning for their senior season and so they will be the leaders on D. Probably the first time ever we have three captains on D and they are all LB's.

Strongest athlete: Tommy Togiai
Even before he had ever played a down at Ohio State, Tommy Togiai was already being talked about in amazement by teammates for his raw, natural power. With a couple years of additional development in the strength program, the defensive tackle has only added more beef to his frame, and nobody disputes that he can move more iron than anybody on the roster. Good luck to opposing offensive linemen trying to move him as Togiai takes over a likely starting role on the interior for the Buckeyes this year.

Article on Togiai by Spencer Holbrook today talking about how his HS coach saw him do double-digit reps of 225 as an INCOMING freshman; then rode him to a state title in Idaho.

Huge potential here. As I said in the post above a couple of weeks ago; I expect that potential to pay off this year.

Re: Ohio State won the battle, maybe because of the Friday Night Lights camp where Mariani and Togiai sat down with defensive line coach Larry Johnson, who showed them drills to do throughout Togiai’s senior season at Highland. That was huge for Togiai, who picked the Buckeyes and enrolled early.

He immediately began to be developed by Johnson. He went from playing with some technique and a load of talent at high school to finding ways to add more technique to his incredible strength and size.

“He’s just one of those really strong, really fast type kids — but he was pretty savvy playing for us,” Mariani said. “He wasn’t just like: ‘I’m going to bowl over this guy, I’m going to rush here.’

“He actually read things and made plays sideline to sideline. Now, his technique has obviously gotten a lot better through what Larry has taught him.

What a recruiter!!!: Larry Johnson is coaching the player while still in high school........:boogie:

Re: Then Michigan called, triggering an Ohio State offer and a Penn State offer. Togiai’s recruitment went national.

Just sayin': Harbaugh (or an assistant) would have probably just offered to do a "sleep over"......

One of the most important third-year players for the Buckeyes this season will be Tommy Togiai, who is set to take over as Ohio State’s starting nose tackle. He played the most snaps in 2019 of any returning defensive tackle, a position at which the Buckeyes lost three fifth-year seniors from last season and have only six players on scholarship entering 2020, and is expected to be the star – or at least one of them – of Larry Johnson’s interior defensive line this fall.

Although he hasn’t become a household name yet, there’s no question that the Buckeyes have high expectations for Togiai going into his junior year, and it won’t come as a surprise if he establishes himself as one of the nation’s best nose tackles this season.
