PHOENIX -- Tim Duncan has officially notified USA Basketball that he will not be a part of the U.S. team that will compete at this year's world championships and the 2008 Olympics.
<table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="2" width="8"> </td><td width="65">

</td></tr><tr><td width="65">Duncan</td></tr></tbody></table>Jerry Colangelo, managing director of USA Basketball, said Saturday that Duncan's agent, Lon Babby, had called with the news earlier this week. Because of the call, Colangelo did not meet with Duncan when the San Antonio Spurs were in Arizona this weekend.
After the Spurs' 91-86 loss to the Suns on Saturday night, Duncan confirmed his feelings on playing for the U.S. team.
"I have no interest in that," he said.
Colangelo, chosen to form a team to bring the U.S. back to world prominence in the sport, is requiring players to make a three-year commitment. The commitment includes a training camp in July, probably to be held in Las Vegas, as well as exhibition games in China and South Korea leading to the worlds in Japan in August.
There will be another training camp next year, followed by another and more exhibition games prior to the 2008 Games in Beijing.
Colangelo said has met with 15 to 18 players, and Duncan was the first to say he would not take part. Some, including Shaquille O'Neal, have said they were still considering it, while others, including Allen Iverson, have said they were willing to make the commitment.
Duncan was part of the U.S. team that won the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. He was selected for the U.S. team at the 2000 Olympics but had to withdraw with a knee injury.
Duncan played for the U.S. teams at the FIBA Americas qualifying tournaments in 1999 and 2003.
Colangelo, who has said the team will include role players and not be simply a collection of superstars, plans to announce the first batch of camp invitees by the NBA's All-Star break in mid-February.

Now Tim Duncan is my favorite player and I believe he is the best power forward of all time, but I am very disappointed in this decision. Does he have no pride in the U.S.A.?

In '04, he was dominant when he was getting bullshit fouls called on him. I can only think that he was discouraged by this, and that is why there is a lack of interest on his part.

no Olympic team in the world would have anyone that could guard Shaq, not even close.

I guarantee he would have a lot of problems doing what he normally does in the NBA because the international officials call games like the pussy ACC officials. He would get 5 offensive fouls easy.

He's played in two already (Well, got hurt before 2000)... not bad for a kid who probably can't even vote for President.:wink2:

Sadly, I highly doubt we will ever see another Dream Team. Although, the younger stars in the NBA seem the most eager to join. The thing is that the other teams in the Olympics practice much longer than we do...

There is no greater honor than representing your country. No money, no trophy, not award is more important and I am disappointed to hear anyone say that.

True, but we need to stop pretending that BB players are different from the other Olympic athletes. Why do gymnists and swimmers take the Olympics so seriously? It has NOTHING to do with representing their country. It is because the Olympics is their Super Bowl. Nobody cares about Nationals or World Championships. It's the Olympic medal that leads to immortality, endorsements, fame. Duncan has all of these already without the Olympics.

The people here in town won't care at all! It's his decision not to play.
Tim Duncan just wants to maintain his low profile. Just let his game do the talking. The only thing I've seen him get fired up about is winning championships!

Tim Duncan has represented the United States on multiple occasions when other big name NBA stars (Garnett, Shaq, Bryant, ect.) said "no way!". Duncan's decision should be respected and any question on his loyalty to the U.S. is without merit.

glad to see the patriotism is runnin high nowadays.....

no but seriously, if we could get lebron, iverson, kobe, and then Shaq, we should be good to go. Garnett would be awesome to have, Vince Carter would be good, McGrady would be nice, but we already have enough of the #3 SG / SF types, we need some big men.

I kind of don't blame some of the guys that don't want to do it, because after their long and exhausting season in the NBA, then having to go out and commit yourself to the olympics and still maintain your offseason workout would be tough. It is only once every 4 years, though.

The international officials would kill Shaq.

I like the idea of Colangelo adding 'role' players. We got killed by role players
last time. We need guys that are willing to bust their ass on the defensive end, without regard to their offense. We need guys that can hit cluth free throws at the end of a close game.

Hopefully Kobe plays defense like he can. Hopefully LBJ can learn to play better defense.

I thought I read that Mike Miller is being considered for a spot.

Probably because he either walks or commits an offensive foul every time he touches the ball.
