Many may fear that Fickell will bail for a HC job before Heacock steps down as DC...I would like to think not. Fickell will make a hellacious DC, and I think he'd be satisfied with being the DC at Ohio State as much as he would being a HC at any other school.

He and Vrabes would make a helluva tandem when Vrabes decides he's done in the league!

Passion for job fuels Fickell's fire, pushes OSU's defense

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Game planning for games against Penn State in State College, Pa., is about as close to eastern philosophy as the Ohio State coaching staff is going to get.
It is unlikely to hear Jim Tressel spread the teachings of Chinese philosophers Confucius and Lao Tzu. This is not to say, however, there is no room for a yang to Tressel?s yin.

Just got home from watching Coach Fickell speak at NWO AllStar game. As always, he did a 1st class job, but that is expected, he is a class act and a great representative for OSU. He talked for 25 minutes and was able to keep attention of 100 or so 17 and 18 year olds. No small feat in 90 degree heat. He talked about about doing things that took no talent, something I had never heard before. By that he meant things like going to the weightroom, going to class and studying, being a good citizen, doing the right thing etc. He said that people who do not do the things that take no talent end up not making it at OSU regardless of how much talent they have. Every time I see Coach Fickell I am amazed at how much weight he has lost, looks like DB instead of DT.
?At Ohio State there are always high expectations, and rightfully so,? he said. ?We?ve got a good group of kids coming back. We only have about eight seniors, so we?re going to have some young guys.
?It?s going to come down to a few key positions.?
OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
Next in line

Plain Dealer Reporter Columbus
-- His players can't imagine a scenario that would cause linebackers coach Luke Fickell to leave Ohio State.
"They could offer Luke Fickell the head coaching job of the New England Patriots and I think he'd say no," OSU senior defensive end/fullback and former linebacker Curtis Terry said. "Ohio State is definitely in his blood."
Leading the Buckeyes might be in Fickell's future.
Purdue comes to Ohio Stadium today with a current coach in Joe Tiller and a future coach in Danny Hope, one of three major college programs with a coaching succession plan in place. If ever such a scenario unfolded at Ohio State -- where 55-year-old coach Jim Tressel's contract runs through the 2012 season -- the 35-year-old Fickell, a former Buckeye defensive tackle, is the most likely member of the current staff to be handed the crown.

Ohio State football: Fickell offered job at Notre Dame
by Doug Lesmerises

Ohio State linebackers coach Luke Fickell has been offered a job on the defensive staff at Notre Dame, a source close to the situation confirmed tonight. Fickell recently went to South Bend to check out the situation. Young coaches investigating other job opportunities is nothing new, but this one is interesting.
Fickell someday aspires to be a head coach, though he has said in the past that he's not in a hurry to uproot his young family when his personal and professional roots are so firmly planted in Central Ohio.
When there were several head coaching openings in the MAC this offseason, seen as a logical next step for a coach in Fickell's position, he didn't go after any of the positions very vigorously. He's certainly at a point where he's only going to leave Ohio State for a situation that he considers a very good fit.

Ohio State football: Fickell not going to Notre Dame

Ohio State linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell will not be taking a job offered to him on the defensive staff at Notre Dame, a source close to situation said tonight.
Fickell is friends with Jon Tenuta, Notre Dame's linebackers coach and assistant head coach, and Fickell talked this week with the Fighting Irish, who are looking to fill their defensive line job vacated by the resignation of Jappy Oliver.
Fickell just completed his seventh season as a member of Ohio State's staff, after starting at nose guard for the Buckeyes from 1993 to 1996. Tenuta joined the Ohio State defensive staff for the '96 season.
