Dwan Mathis (QB Temple Owls)

Dad tweeted that Dwan signed with the dogs because of the opportunity there, not because of what OSU did. Implied that OSU did in fact ask him to either wait or not enroll early. Pretty shitty IMO. The only thing I can think of is they are expecting Fields or someone else.

I would argue it's the opposite of lousy by our staff, if they actually think they will get Fields. Imagine how the kid would feel if we let him sign and then signed another guy two weeks later that would obviously be ahead of him. By asking him to wait they would at least allow him to keep his options open and not make a commitment he couldn't get out of for at least a year. It would seem to me they were looking out for his best overall outcome one way or the other.

He's not playing the next two years behind Fromm anyways..

His coach says otherwise:

“With the events of the past couple of days with the Justin Fields kid and all that, they anticipated him going to Ohio State, so I can’t say I was surprised,” Carter said.

Conspiracy theory:

Would anyone put it past Kirby, knowing that Justin is looking around, to have him start putting out public feelers now, right before early signing day, knowing that he needed to restock w/ a QB in this class and probably needed to steal one away from another top program to get a good one this late.

I know, I'm reaching, but it's a heck of a strategy to get a kid to commit to you if you tell him the back up @ UGA is leaving and the program he's going to is already bringing in someone else to add depth to potentially take future reps from you..... you do the math.

Would suck if we lose Mathis and don't get Fields. Would suck too if Fields contributes in the CFP in anyway and decides that he wants to stay @ UGA (since Kirby has left that option open) and Mathis gets buried in QB room @ UGA after flipping.

Thoughts, BigWolf? Is Fields def leaving?

What we are hearing as well.
From Rusty Mansell this morning, the lead Georgia guy at 247 that I'm sure you know of:

-Some rumblings about Justin Fieldsand FSU last night. According to a trusted source I talked to, that would be a long shot and I think more and more it is Ohio State. He is not allowed to visit schools during this time but he can after the bowl game. This decision will not take long (if he goes and I believe he does) and I would watch Ohio State right now the most.

The fact that his family has already hired an attorney who has successfully appealed the NCAA for waivers in the past indicates he's almost certainly out the door.
This guy (lawyer) is a big shot and he doesn't work on contingency fees. They had to fork over some money to get him to say yes.

Mr. Fields is very, very likely to leave.

Well that sure is intriguing. I don't think any of us would oppose a trade of Fields for Mathis. Please let it be. Mathis could be a really good QB, but I think he is a few years away. In a few years, Jack Miller is (hopefully) our guy and Fields would be now (or shortly after Tate).
Well if it isn't true it builds a hell of a tampering case for OSU though I hope it is for obvious reasons

Re: They only have one quarterback on scholarship on their roster (Jake Fromm). I’m enrolling early, can’t wait to get there.”

Just sayin': I like a recruit that has confidence in his ability, isn't afraid of the competition, realizes good competition will only make him better, and isn't looking/hoping to get playing time by "default" (i.e. nobody else at their position).
