Dwight Howard (NTTAWWT)

Dwight Howard, will only sign extension with Nets, therefor handcuffing his current team as far as trade options:

Seriously, [censored] that league. How much longer is that gnome commissioner going to allow the players to hold their teams hostage and set up fantasy teams? They, literally, are just trying to create aau teams at this point. NBAAU

What a joke.

nothing shocking about this.. Cowterd was defending him because someone said he felt betrayed because (in my best teenage mocking someone crying voice) "no one has come to check on me while I rehab from my back surgery, you guys loved me until i had my surgery and signed the waiver to stay"

fuck his whiny ass bitch... glad I don't watch this soap opera crap

If you're management, don't sign idiotic contracts that allow free agents to control their own destiny (i.e. rights of refusal)...

Thanks for the advice--then if you're a small market team, you get superstars for zero years instead of for some small number of years at the end of which you're held hostage by said superstars. Care to try again?

Calm down tough guy. If you're a small market team, or probably better put, a non-destination-city team, you're going to be at a disadvantage no matter what.

That being said, the NBA is a revenue-sharing, market cap league. There are only 450 roster spots in the NBA, and only 150 starting players. Someone will play for you, even if you're in a crappy market. You can still write contracts to get young, hungry players, even if they're not Dwight Howard, and those players can become stars. And, more importantly, those teams can become very good. If you're a GM, do your job. Writing the biggest, gaudiest contracts might be necessary sometimes, but it can also be lazy GM'ing.

No sympathy for Orlando. They should've dealt him last summer when they knew he could've walked for nothing after this season.

Agreed. Orlando needed to make some moves in order to hang on to Howard. When those moves consisted of bringing Hedo Turkoglu back, I think Howard had seen enough.

:slappy:. OK.

So which is it? First you blamed the GMs, now you're claiming that non-destination cities are going "to be at a disadvantage no matter what." Backpedal much?

I think he was actually making a second point, rather than back pedal. He's right though, don't let the "Superstar" control the GM. When that happens, we get NBAAU, as NFBuck calls it.

My fucking hell, what I'm saying is just not that complicated, you're taking it way too personally, and I haven't backpedaled an inch, the two ideas I've expressed are not mutually exclusive.

How do most small-market/non-destination teams get star players? The draft. What happens next is the best players have some leverage when they sign a 2nd contract. If you're a GM, and this was my first point, don't give the player a right of refusal. If he wants to walk because of that, so be it. Don't be held hostage and don't be held hostage into signing a contract that allows him to hold you hostage down the road.

2nd point is that it will be harder to attract free agents to a smaller or crappier cities - who was the last star Milwuakee had? - this is not a backpedal, it's the truth. So go out and GM, do your job. Build good teams of working men, or get the right stars. The David Robinsons, Duncans, stocktons, M alones and, who knows, maybe Durants can make you money and win you shiny trophies
