E. Gordon Gee (President West Virginia U.)

Gee sent out an e-mail stating this.

The Ohio State University Medical Center named to honor Les Wexner‏

The Ohio State University
Dr. Gordon Gee - University Wide Email
Wexner Medical Center Naming

I am delighted to share some truly momentous news. Today, The Ohio State University Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name our academic medical center in honor of alumnus Leslie H. Wexner ('59). His strategic vision and clarity of purpose have been instrumental in realizing many of the University's great advancements - and nowhere more so than at what is now known as the Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University. This naming is honorific in nature, commemorating Mr. Wexner's indelible, lifelong legacy of leadership at Ohio State.

For more than three decades, Mr. Wexner has been one of the University's most committed leaders and ardent supporters. His generous contributions, both in time and resources, have been wholly transformational, but his most valuable gift has been his remarkable leadership.

Les Wexner has served 16 years on our Board of Trustees. As Board chair, he helped to guide the $1 billion expansion of the medical center, the largest undertaking in the University's history, and one that will revolutionize the way cancer prevention and health care are provided. The Wexner family has been closely involved with many of the signature programs connected with the medical center. They chair the James Fund for Life Campaign and have contributed significantly to the Stress, Trauma and Resilience Program. Abigail Wexner currently serves on the medical center's Board of Directors. And they have been lead supporters of Pelotonia, one of the most successful cancer-research fundraisers in the nation.

Mr. Wexner's impact is truly realized across the breadth of Ohio State. He was instrumental in establishing one of the great cultural gems on this campus and in the country, the Wexner Center for the Arts, named in honor of his father. He also helped to form the Fisher College of Business and ensure its place as one of the premier business schools in the country.

To our immense good fortune, Les Wexner has a singular and unequivocal vision for our medical center - and that is to be a world-class institution. One that relentlessly pursues the best medical techniques, treatments, and cures to improve the lives of patients and their families. I have every confidence that his leadership and clear purpose will continue to advance our work in important and enduring ways.

Sincerely,
E. Gordon Gee
President

Gordon Gee: Bowl ban was coming ?no matter what?
By Pat Brennan

Published: Sunday, February 19, 2012

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee disagrees with the penalties that were administered to the university's football program for NCAA rules infractions and seems to think the NCAA tried to make an example of OSU.

During a Feb. 6 meeting with The Lantern, Gee said he believed the NCAA-administered one-year bowl ban and reduction of nine scholarships for infractions dating back to OSU's 2010 season were dealt to the Buckeyes because "this was Ohio State." A college sports lawyer and a former OSU football coach disagree with the punishments assessed to the program, but wouldn't join Gee in saying the NCAA tried to make an example of the Buckeyes.

During the 2010 football season, former OSU coach Jim Tressel failed to report infractions six of his players committed. Buckeyes' wide receiver DeVier Posey, left tackle Mike Adams, quarterback Terrelle Pryor, running back Daniel "Boom" Herron and defensive end Solomon Thomas each received a five-game suspension in 2011 for selling OSU football memorabilia in exchange for improper benefits in the form of tattoos. Linebacker Jordan Whiting received a one-game ban.

The players finished the season and helped the Buckeyes to a 12-1 record that ended with a 31-26 win against Arkansas in the 2011 Sugar Bowl. The season was later vacated as part of the university's self-imposed penalties and the $388,811 of winnings it took from the Sugar Bowl win was donated to charity on Aug. 15.

On Dec. 20, the NCAA announced its penalties for OSU football. Months later, Gee told The Lantern he still disagrees with the NCAA's ruling.

"First of all, the NCAA ? if we would have given up five bowl games, they would have imposed the sixth on us because they were going to impose a bowl ban. This was Ohio State. This was (the NCAA's) moment in time, and they were going to impose a bowl ban no matter what we did."

Gee, who focused his comments mostly on the bowl ban and not the reduction of nine scholarships over the next three seasons, said the university's communicative efforts with the NCAA indicate that OSU has been and continues to be "overly compliant in some ways."

"I'm a lawyer," Gee said. "I take a look at precedent. There's no precedent for a bowl ban for us."

Hate crimes on campus, a looming juggernaut of a semester switch, coach Urban Meyer?s modern ways and Jared Sullinger?s departure from Ohio State: President E. Gordon Gee talked about them all in a Monday night meeting with The Lantern editorial staff.

Reflecting on the construction going on across all of his campus, Gee said the project on the South Campus residence halls is progressing, and the rest of the university will soon follow suit.

?Beautiful facilities over there, moving from Motel 6 to the Ritz,? Gee said. ?Wonderful facilities.?

Gee on salaries, bonuses: ?I?m not sorry?
By Sarah Stemen

Published: Tuesday, April 24, 2012

The amount of money distributed in bonuses to Ohio State employees in 2011 was almost $5 million more than what was generated from the university?s 2011-2012 academic year 3.5 percent tuition increase.

Seven OSU employees received bonuses of more than $1 million in 2011. The total amount of money used toward bonuses adds up to $25.6 million. Additionally, 25 employees were paid bonuses of $100,000 or more, according to OSU payroll records.

The 3.5 percent undergraduate-tuition increase raised in-state tuition from $3,140 in 2010 per quarter to $3,245 in 2011 and out-of-state tuition from $7,868 to $8,210 per quarter. With 43,525 Ohioans enrolled at OSU for the 2011-2012 academic year and 7,042 non-Ohioan, non-international students, the total number of additional dollars totaled about $20.8 million.

Gee slams 'Sports Illustrated,' 'Sporting News' as 'bad journalism'
By Pat Brennan
[email protected]
Published: Wednesday, April 25, 2012

??Sporting News,? ?Sports Illustrated,? a lot of them I don?t read. It?s bad journalism. And, so, why buy them??

The ?bad journalism? in question was President E. Gordon Gee?s assessment of ?Sporting News?? April 9 article titled ?From champs to chomped: How Urban Meyer broke Florida football,? which reported on an ?out-of-control? culture left behind by Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer when he departed the University of Florida?s program in January 2011. The article also reported wide-spread drug use among his former players.

Gee also voiced concern about ?Sports Illustrated,? which published an investigative report on OSU football and former Buckeye coach Jim Tressel in May. Tressel was forced to resign from his post May 30.

In discussing the ?Sporting News? story, Gee defended Meyer.

?One doesn?t hire a coach without talking with all the right people,? he said. ?One doesn?t hire a coach without understanding exactly what his values are.?

Gee said someone in Meyer?s position is always going to be subject to criticism, but that much of it is not concerning to him.

?You know, (OSU) is such a high-profile job, everyone?s going to nip at him,? Gee said. ?Not having fully read the story, but having read portions of it, it is what it is. I would hope that at our institution we teach a higher quality of journalism.?

Why is a university president addressing Sporting News article?

Because he's also a fan of everything tOSU. In fact, I'd argue that talking shit about Urban is an indirect swipe at Gee, who had a role in his hiring. Fuck that noise. I like that Gee sticks up for tOSU, even if he says silly shit at times.

"Never argue with idiots" / "wrestle with pigs" comes to mind here

That's the problem, too many Gee quotes sound like fan reactions not calculated strikes from an administrator

That's why I love Gordo. Everything he does that actually matters is calculated. I don't mind him popping off to defend something he loves. Then again, I'm not a graduate, so my opinion matters little.
