E. Gordon Gee (President West Virginia U.)

Why is a university president addressing Sporting News article?

Maybe because every national sports media outlet treated that article as Pulitzer material, and what better way to marginalize a second-rate publication than by dismissing them so derisively?

Let's all keep in mind, Les Wexner and the BoT probably don't grade their hand-picked prez based on sports-page quotes.

Slowly, as Student Debt Rises, Colleges Confront Costs

Slowly, as Student Debt Rises, Colleges Confront Costs

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? In a wood-paneled office lined with books, sports memorabilia and framed posters (including John Belushi in ?Animal House?), E. Gordon Gee, the president of
Ohio State University, keeps a framed quotation that reads, ?If you don?t like change, you?re going to like irrelevance even less.?

Mr. Gee, who is often identified with a big salary and spendthrift ways, says he has taken the mantra to heart, and he is now trying to persuade Ohio State?s vast bureaucracy, and the broader world of academia, to do the same.

At a time of diminished state funding for higher education and uncertain federal dollars, Mr. Gee says that public colleges and universities need to devise a new business model to pay for the costs of education, beyond sticking students with higher tuition and greater debt.

?The notion that universities can do business the very same way has to stop,? said Mr. Gee, who is also the chairman of a commission studying college attainment, including the impact of student debt.

President E. Gordon Gee sits at the top of the newly released list of the nation?s highest paid public university presidents, earning a salary shy of $2 million in the 2011 fiscal year.

Recently published by the Chronicle of Higher Education, the list includes 199 of the nation?s highest paid public university presidents.

Gee?s total compensation of $1,992,221 is comprised of a base pay of $814,157, $881,278 in deferred compensation and $296,786 of bonus pay, which the university says is paid out of non-public funds.

Second on the list is Texas A&M President Michael McKinney who, despite serving a partial year, would have earned $1,966,347 for one year?s salary.

Ohio State and Texas A&M are comparable in rank, one factor that some say is important in determining salary.

OSU and Texas A&M were ranked 17th and 19th in the nation, respectively, on U.S. News and World Report?s 2012 top public schools ranking.

Alex Fischer, president and CEO of the Columbus Partnership, a nonprofit organization of Columbus-area CEOs, said that considering OSU?s reputation, Gee is deserving of such a salary.

?I think it would hold true that if you take one of the best recognized and highly-held university presidents at one of the world?s greatest institutions that the salary would be commensurate,? Fischer said.

Gee is worth every cent of what he is paid. The man is everywhere on campus and has completely reshaped OSU for the next 50 years.

First of all, Gee is there for the kids. Whether it is helping freshman move in, sitting down to talk to the students at various events or soliciting input from student government, he has the pulse of the student body. He is enthusiastic and engaged and the kids just love him.

Secondly, Gee has made the admissions process far more competitive. The average in-state GPA requirement is now about 3.5 and out of state is nearly 3.9. OSU's academic profile is on the rise

Thirdly, he has built....or is building a world class medical school, research institute and hospital that will drive dollars into OSU and fund the next wave of innovation in medicine.

He may look like Orville Redenbacher, put his foot into his mouth on occassion, but the guy is a true 24/7 Buckeye and is worth every cent....and then some.

As an Alumnus, I am damned glad to have him running this school

It's surprising that The Lantern publishes that chart, with Spanier's name second on the list, and they don't even mention that he was forced out from PSU in disgrace last November.

Everyone will hate me for saying this, but it is my understanding that Karen Holbrook was the one who began OSU's trajectory of rising academic standards. With that said, I think Gee is doing a good job.

All Holbrook (and Kirwin) did was run the Gee playbook from his first time around.

(that's my story and I'm sticking to it)

Despite the unfortunate beer crackdowns and comments about football, Britt was the larger trainwreck, IMO.

Just wanted to share this story. I was visiting campus today for alumni relations and my friend had to go into the registrar because of an error on his accout. The balance was showing 512$ and my friend wasn't going to be able to graduate because he has absolutely no money right now. Gee walked in, handed him a slip for a 550$ scholarship, told him to have a great day, and walked out with an O-H! What an unbelievable man...OSU is so blessed to have him at the helm. This is just one of about a 100 stories I have heard like this from OSU students.
