NFL Films grew out of a hobby for Ed Sabol.

On a novice?s camera, given to him as a wedding gift in the late 1930s, Ed Sabol discovered a hobby to fill in a few hours of spare time in an extraordinary life.

Sabol was selected to compete as a swimmer in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin ? two years before he attended Ohio State ? but he refused to swim in any pool built by Adolf Hitler. During World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge under Gen. George Patton and took part in the Utah Beach invasion.

In 1936 Ed stayed out of the water because of Hitler, 8 years later he went into the water because of Hitler, and those decisions both make perfect sense to me.

Congrats to Ed on entering the NFL Hall of Fame.

As an indication of his willingness to spend money for the quality of his product, Ed Sabol liked to say, ?Let the film run like water.?

Sabol knows plenty about film, an expensive medium. The ground-breaking work done by his creation, NFL Films, has the 94-year old being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

And Sabol knows a little something about the H2O, too.

Long before he made his mark with NFL Films, Sabol made waves in the swimming pool for Ohio State.

A decorated swimmer, Sabol was leadoff man for the 400-yard freestyle relay team, which won a Big Ten championship in that event in 1938 and an AAU national championship.

?I went to Ohio State University mainly because they had a beautiful swimming pool,? Sabol said in an email. ?I was also impressed with their coach, Mike Peppe, and with the fact they had recruited eight or 10 talented high school and prep school swimmers, so it looked like we were going to have a pretty good team. My predictions were correct.?

"He's a legend, what he brought to the table, what he brought to the game. Still to this day, NFL Films plays a major role in shaping our thought process of the game of football, and allowing you to get a closer glimpse of each player and team, coaches." - Deion Sanders on Ed Sabol

"My dad has a great expression. He always says, 'Tell me a fact and I'll learn, tell me the truth and I believe, but tell me a story, and it will live in my heart forever.' Interestingly enough now, my dad's story is going to be in Canton and hopefully that will live forever, too." - Steve Sabol

Pro Football Hall of Fame
Ed Sabol Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2011 Enshrinee was presented by his son Steve Sabol.

CANTON ?

His words were few.

His impact, as usual, was immeasurable.

Ed Sabol was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night during ceremonies at Fawcett Stadium. The 94-year-old creator of NFL Films is bound to a wheelchair much of the time and hampered by the normal ailments brought on by nine decades on this Earth.

But the years have not touched his wits.

?I dreamed a dream. The impossible dream. I dreamed the impossible dream, and I?m living it right this minute,? said Sabol, who spoke for less than three minutes.

He then added, ?I said that twice because at my age your memory starts to go a little bit.?

Steve Sabol, who presented his dad in a video segment, talked about the February day his dad was announced as a Hall of Famer.

?When dad was inducted into the Hall of Fame, he called me and he said, ?Send me a producer. I?ve got one more film left in me.?

?And so, here it is, the last film directed by Ed Sabol.?

The NFL Network had a fine 1-hour documentary on the career of Ed Sabol. He's been quite a character his entire life.

It will be re-broadcast Tuesday night at 10 pm ET, and 2 am ET on Wednesday morning on the NFL Network.
