Well, you guys did give up 37+ points in three of your last four games...
Yeah, and those were some awful teams we played in OSU and Texas, huh? As for MSU, we always hate playing the Spartans because they're so neurotic and can pull out a great performance or choke job at the drop of a hat.

Besides, I explained I don't think we'll have any enormous defensive fallout in 2005 in my previous post.

You guys act like losing Shazor and Jackson will mean we allow 40+ a game. Leon Hall looks to have a lot of potential and it'd be hard for us not to improve replacing Curry. Burgess started to come on in the Rose Bowl, Woodley is a monster, Big Gabe is unmovable, and you know someone unexpected will step up (they always do in college football). So long as we fire Hermann we'll be fine.

Although, I should add that when I say "fine" I mean just that I expect Henne, Hart, Avant, and Breaston to score more points than everyone we play.

Last 4 games you guys AVERAGED giving up 33 ppg.

Sounds like a lot to ask of an offense that loses Edwards and Baas.

Even if there is no fallout, you guys gave up over 23ppg last year.

And as far as the level of competition during the big scoring games, it was due to running QB's and teams that spread you out. Regardless of wanting to face it or not, you have a speed/athleticisim problem on the defensive side of the ball.

It is a lot to ask, and don't think I'm not concerned. But it's also an offense that gains a healthy Breaston, a full year of experience and conditioning in Hart, Henne, Long, and three other linemen, and a lot of potential in Grady. If Henne really takes off, we could be better. I doubt it, but we could.

But back to the defense. I'm just trying to say that the sky is not falling on us. We've got a lot of talent. Of course, if Hermann is still around, I predict we'll have our patented Michigan season, losing two we shouldn't and our bowl game.

I tend to put the blame on Hermann. The guys took terrible pursuit lines against Vince Young and were outschemed by MSU and OSU. That's coaching, in my opinion.

You do bring up a good point here, I do think that your defense did take terrible angles against TexAss. I do agree that coaching probably could be blamed for some of it. I was just suprised that Michigan wasn't more ready for a scrambler right after they got beat by another scrambler.

Briegg you are looking at it from the wrong perspective. Michigan has lost their 2 best DB's in a horrible secondary. I will watch their first three games and see how their young talent holds up. IMO Michigan will score 21+ points every game but will give up 21+ a game on defense. Mobile QB's are gonna kill em.

I will bet Weis is gonna watch film and run a spread offense against them. I know I would test that secondary early and often chief. Curry is graduating which was a key compenent to the depth they have in their secondary. Throw early and throw often against this secondary next year.

Man I hate to go all out and think ND will have a good team but man when you got the NFL's top offensive co-ordinator as your HC you gotta think ND should be able to move the ball. ND has every starter on offense back....

Defense ! Well ....

Braylon Edwards is gonna be a bigger loss than the skunkies think. No more jump balls by Henne. Stop the run and hope for the best. Michigan also loses their punter. They got Molesko from Ohio and he is very good but I would come after him every punt.

Ugh. So now we'll likely have a Hermann coached defense with a dearth of talent in the secondary. Hopefully our line and linebackers will be good enough to cover this weakness somewhat. Jerome Jackson is likely to move to DB now along with with a wide receiver or two.

Of course losing Edwards hurts. There's two major reasons (apart from Hart, Martin, and Grady) we shouldn't have as huge a drop off as you'd expect from losing a player as good as Edwards: Talent at wide receiver and Henne's experience.

One of our team's major strengths is its insane depth at wide receiver. All of the following are Rivals 4-stars: Avant, Breaston, Tabb, Arrington, Dutch, Trent, Manningham, and Bass. We're so deep we're likely going to move one or two of them to DB. Avant and Breaston are both known talents, and I'm sure one of the others will step up as a third. There's six of them; the odds are on our side.

Secondly, Henne will have a full year of experience behind him, and should be able to make use of more players than before. Give him a break for throwing so much to Edwards, he was a true freshman. Like I pointed out before, Henne was as good a true freshman as Navarre was a 5th year senior. With a full year of experience, I expect him to spread the ball around, most importantly with a healthy Breaston. He shouldn't need to throw the ball up for grabs if he's smart.

No ones saying you won't have a decent offense but it won't be quite as good as this years no matter how many recruiting stars the youngsters have. Your not just going to replace Edwards that quick.

The defense will probably be worse, especially early on.

You don't need to go anyfurther than an OSU board to find people who will tell you how easy it is to struggle with a gaggle of young players no matter how much talent they have or are surrounded by.

I guess it all comes down to what your expectations are. If the usual 9-3 is ok then I'm sure Llloyd will find a way to get you there. If you have NC aspirations then I think you are setting yourself up for big time dissapointment.

All things considerd I'd say scUM is somewhere between Alamo and Outback next year. OSU and Iowa are the clear frontrunners and Minny or Purdue might actually get over the hump one of these days as well. Teams like MSU and PSU will be tough but I look for Wisky and NU to join IU and Illinois in the cellar. They had their chance to do damage with senior laden teams in a down year for the B10 and blew it, now they'll be young and a big step behind the rest of the leauge imo.
