ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

Rodriguez is a white last name now?
Oh, for fuck's sake! No, it's a Spanish last name. People from a pretty wide variety of ethnicities have them. And yes, Rich Rodriguez is white (insofar as these broad racial distinctions make any biological sense at all).

I just called ESPN stupid, right?

In line with the main theme of this thread

Stupidity:
In an article posted on the Detroit Free Press web site, you will find this:
Rodriguez is widely considered one of two Hispanic coaches in Division I-A football. Florida International's Mario Cristobal is the other. But the Black Coaches and Administrators excludes Rodriguez as a minority football coach, even though West Virginia considers him of Hispanic descent. "He's never considered himself a minority, or a member of the BCA, even though we've asked him to do that," BCA director Floyd Keith told the Birmingham (Ala.) News in October. "How they include him (at West Virginia) is fine. We would love to have included him in our numbers, but that's not his choice."
This raises a fundamental question of what kind of pressure the BCA is applying, to their criteria. Rodriguez IS of Hispanic descent, and by definition that makes him a minority as defined by the U.S. Government. It only matters to the BCA is that he chose not to be a member, but why should he have to? The BCA website makes it clear, despite an occasional passing reference to ethic minorities. their mission os to promote the hiring of black head coaches and administrators.

It is also troubling that USA Today has taken the BCA definition to identify minority coaches and not the definition of law. It is troubling that the NCAA seems to accept this definition as well. It seems that if a school or coach is not going to play by the BCA's rules, they will not be counted as having hired a minority coach.

To take this a step further. The new policy that has been issued requires Athletics Directors to interview, and document that interview, of a minority coach. But from the read of the quote above, it seems that the BCA will only acknowledge this interview if

a. The candidate self-identifies themselves as a minorityl AND
b. They are a member of the BCA.

So if there is a minority candidate out there, black or otherwise, that has chosen to not belong to the BCA because they do not agree with its mission, or do not consider themselves black, the school will not receive credit for having conducted the interview.

That coverage was an embarrassment to ESPN, so I'm glad they did it. They looked like a bunch of idiots covering a white van driving around. Manning was working out for a team. He wasn't signing. Not a big deal. They're doing that on the second day of the men's tournament.

Report: Only Matter Of Time Before A 'SportsCenter' Host Snaps, Blows Brains Out On Live Television

BRISTOL, CT?Citing the increasingly frenetic pace at which SportsCenter anchors and correspondents are forced to report the same shallow feature items, gushing personality profiles, and artificially inflated news stories, media analysts announced Friday that ESPN was at great risk of seeing one of its hosts die of a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a live broadcast.

"Even a casual viewer, say someone who watches SportsCenter three or four times a week, can see that the warning signs have been there for a while," Dr. Susan Scheub of Syracuse University said. "The strained faces of the presenters as they read yet another Tim Tebow story late last year, their tortured voices as they tried to pass off the statistical anomaly of 'Linsanity' as some sort of magical phenomenon?classic evidence of stress and trauma. Given what I've seen on the show this week, I'd be surprised if we get through the Peyton Manning free-agency tour without a tragic incident, let alone March Madness."

Scheub was most likely referring to an incident earlier this week in which obviously upset SportsCenter anchor Kevin Negandhi discussed Manning's visit to the Tennessee Titans for the 11th time while absentmindedly brandishing a large-caliber handgun, his voice pitching higher and higher as he spoke more and more quickly, often using the firearm to rub his temple, support his chin, or gesture at guest commentator Adam Schefter.

Cont'd ...
