Wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but I thought it would get this most attention in this forum.

Anyway...
ESPN to unveil 3-D television network in 2010 - ESPN

ESPN; said:
Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 ... the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.
ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa versus Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.

"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement. "ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC's campus.

I really want to know when we get the holograms.

"Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope."

Seriously, I sort of work in a related field (medical visualization) and I can say that it's coming. Don't know if it will take off for entertainment, but for some situations it will be useful.

Does anyone really know if 3D is that much better? I just watched Avatar in 3D Saturday and I can't say that it was any better than it would be in 2D. I guess I'll know after I watch it on DVD unless my wife wants to go see it.

I was one of the relatively few people who went to go see OSU-USC in 3D at Polaris Rave theater. It is definitely different. The cameras they used were not HD, so that was kind of a negative. Also, in order to get a good 3D effect, they use very low camera angles, lots of sideline stuff, etc. It doesn't use the standard "B-Deck" shot, so that's fun. On the upside, it does feel a lot more like watching a game live, and though I'm not sure that you get a whole lot more out of the experience, it's "better enough" and a little more immersive, though It's not like the football comes spiraling into your lap or anything. As long as the network is part of a cable plan and not pay-per-view, I'd watch games in 3D if they upgrade to HD cameras. I can see it taking off and becoming pretty popular.

I was rather hoping I'd get to see Hannah Storm or Wendy Nix spiraling into my lap.

Is anyone else looking forward to watching some games in 3D this year? I just bought my set so I haven't had a chance to watch any live sports yet.

id like to check it out just for like maybe 5 minutes...im not into the whole 3-D sports/TV thing...a movie here and there is cool but sitting around at a house party, drinking and watching the buckeyes with 3-D glasses on the whole time is not something i think would be fun...i get 3-D vision by the 3rd quarter of every buckeyes game i watch from alcohol consumption...3-D glasses are not needed

Nope. I was looking at them at Best Buy the other day, and started to get a headache after about 3 minutes of watching it.

3D is one thing at a movie when your whole field of view is consumed by the 3D image, it is totally different when only a portion of the field of view has the 3D image. I feel there is a long way to go before 3D TV really hits it big.

Hope you have a different experience with your set, though.

Edit: After reading y0yo's post, I didn't even think about drinking while watching 3D. That would probably make me throw up.

I am into Home Theater and usually am an early adopter (1080P HD, laser disc, dvd, blu ray,etc..) but 3d is not for me. The glasses are not comfortable and buying multiple sets of $150 glasses get excessive. I will likely buy a 3d set only because 3d comes on most of the new TVs but I see the 3d thing being a once in a while movie to watch with the kids, not a daily thing.
