Resident Science Dork
As the name gives away I am a scientist working on my Ph.D. My adviser and I are working in Antarctica from mid-April to mid-June via Santiago, Chile and our port of call in Puenta Arenas, Chile in Patagonia. On the way back to the states in June I was hoping to travel a bit in Chile, working my way back up from Puenta Arenas to Santiago where I'll catch my flight back.

I am into everything (hiking, food, nightlife, history, and well, you know, everything), but my one caveat is that I like to get off the tourist path a bit. I'll likely be traveling alone and will be traveling for 7-10 days.

Has anyone ever traveled in Chile? Any guidance/suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are going to Santiago, check out some of my architecture, just down the street from the Estadio Olimpico are the Celinto Catayente Towers. It's quite a fine example, in fact. I recommend that next time you're up that way that you drop in and take a gander at it yourself.

I was in Chile about 8 yrs ago on a business related trip and loved my time there. Spent my time in Maipu and Santiago, but did not get to do a lot of sight seeing.

The people I met were gracious and friendly. The group of people I was with had coffee and dessert with the Mayor of Maipu. I tried to post some pics of the trip, but no luck. I recall one place in Santiago (forget the name) but it is a very popular place to go. Red stone brick walls and plaza/court yard, some green plant vegetation, a cannon in the plaza/court yard, some steep steps that you climb that takes you up pretty high and you are able to look out over the city of Santiago and can see the Andes. Pretty cool view and a nice way to spend a few hours.

OK, this is a long shot but...

.....does anyone know a good sports bar in Puerto Varas, Chile?

I'll be there SuperBowl Sunday. The Solace Hotel (where I'll be) does have cable TV: however, I don't know what channels they carry. The hotel also has free WiFi so if all else fails maybe I can watch the game on my laptop (i.e. from the internet).
