Everett Withers set to join the Ohio State staff
Posted by: Pete Roussel on December 12, 2011

A source with knowledge of the situation has informed me that North Carolina interim head coach Everett Withers will be joining Urban Meyer's staff at Ohio State.

It is likely Withers will arrive in Columbus shortly after North Carolina's bowl game. The Tar Heels play Missouri in the Independence Bowl on December 26th.

As the interim head coach at North Carolina, Withers led the Tar Heels through great adversity to finish 7-5. He previously served for three seasons as the defensive coordinator under Butch Davis.

Decimated by personnel loses and injuries in 2010, Withers held together the Tar Heels defense that helped UNC finish 8-5. Butch Davis stated that if Withers didn't win the Broyles Award, they should do away with the award forever.

A quick search of Google tells me Withers appeared to be a popular choice amongst some in Arkansas for DC last week, amongst some in Texas last year, amongst some in Georgia in 2009, and not at all amongst anybody in Minnesota in 2007.

Also appears to favor a 4-3.

DB coach at Texas and in the pros to go along with that track record for defenses? Plus recruiting presence in NC (notice we have offered a couple guys there lately in LeMay and Marcus) and in the south. I would be a huge fan of this pickup.

I get the strong feeling that if Withers comes to Columbus Jamal Marcus will not be far behind.

Brandon Castel posted on the O-Zone Forum the following (http://forums.theozone.net/messages/233052.html):

Hearing there might be a holdup on Withers because Gene Smith and other decision makers are not fond of Meyer bringing in an assistant who was a part of a separate NCAA scandal.

Based on everything I've been told, Withers has not been linked to any of that, which is the reason he was tabbed as the interim coach at UNC.

Meyer likes Withers, and has for some time. He wants Withers, but Gene keeps telling him to look around....In the end, I don't think that will stop this from happening.

That's a pretty dangerous topic to bring up, Gene.

Putting that aside, I'm pretty sure Fickell's a very visible part of OSU's future.
