Houston dismisses LB Eyabi Anoma for rules violation

Houston linebacker Eyabi Anoma has been dismissed from the program for an unspecified violation of team rules, the school announced on Tuesday.

Anoma, the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2018 ESPN 300, spent a year at Alabama before transferring to Houston. He appeared in six games in for Alabama, recording nine tackles.

Anoma sat out the 2019 season, per NCAA transfer rules. He leaves without having played a game for Houston.

Last August, Alabama coach Nick Saban said Anoma was dismissed from the school. Anoma arrived at Houston later that month, and the Cougars were anticipating him being an impact player in 2020. He drew strong reviews from Houston coaches and teammates for his physical ability while practicing with the scout team during the 2019 season.

Re: There are plenty of schools that will overlook a lot to land a five-star talent like Anoma. Unfortunately, his time may be running out if he can’t get things together.

It is very unclear what his options will be now, after flaming out of two programs.

Dismissed Houston LB Eyabi Anoma enters transfer portal once again

In a bit of an unsurprising development, former Houston and Alabama linebacker Eyabi Anoma has entered his name in the NCAA’s transfer portal. Ayobi will hope to latch on with another college football program.

Anoma was dismissed by Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen for a violation of team rules, a decision that was confirmed this week. This is not Anoma’s first trip through the portal, of course. Anoma stepped in and out, and back into the portal last year as he evaluated his position at Alabama. After initially entering the transfer portal, Anoma withdrew his name from the portal to stay at Alabama. Five months later, Anoma was no longer enrolled at Alabama after being suspended and expelled for a “university-level issue.”

Anoma transferred to Houston last year but was held out of 2019 season due to NCAA transfer rules. If he lands at another FBS program this time around, he will be eligible to play in the 2020 season. Anoma has up to three years of eligibility remaining after being able to burn a redshirt year of eligibility in 2019.

Where Anoma goes from here remains to be seen. The former five-star recruit has plenty of talent and potential and could be an added asset to any defense as long as he stays in the good graces of the staff at his next stop.

On Twitter late last week, the linebacker announced that he will be transferring to FCS Tennessee-Martin. And also offered up a mean culpa to his two previous programs.

“I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been on this journey with me,” Anoma wrote. “It has been very draining emotionally, physically and mentally. However, I would like to apologize to the staff and my teammates at the University of Alabama as well as at the University of Houston for my actions prior to today. I am learning [every day] that every action has a consequence, and it is my responsibility to decide whether or not my actions will be positive or negative. As a young man, I can only take things one day at [a] time and continue to transition into the man [God wants] me to be.

“I want to say thank you to my supporters and family for not giving up on me when things started to get difficult.”
