Chris Jent's return to Ohio State, Thad Matta was a long time coming: What it means for Buckeyes

Found this interesting from the article:

Matta hasn't decided on coaching responsibilities yet. He said he'd get cracking on that when the staff gets together next Monday after recruiting this weekend.

When Jent left he had been running the Buckeyes offense for two seasons, and the Buckeyes finished in the top 11 in the country in KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency both times. That offensive coordinator job has been held by Greg Paulus since. Ohio State had its worst offensive season under Matta last year, the second-worst season was in 2013-14 (according to KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency) -- the year after Jent left.

Those offensive dips also coincide with some pretty important player departures, but Jent could give the Buckeyes offense a jolt if Matta decides to shuffle the coaching responsibilities.

"Chris has a great basketball mind," Matta said. "He likes offense, he likes the skill instruction. Chris is also a guy that will do whatever we need him to do."

OHIO STATE ASSISTANT COACH CHRIS JENT ALREADY MAKING PRESENCE FELT

71703_h.jpg

It does not appear like things took very long for Chris Jent's presence to once again be felt within the Ohio State basketball program.

“You notice Coach Jent as soon as he walks in the gym,” Buckeyes senior forward Marc Loving said Thursday. “He’ll let you know he’s in the gym and he’s willing to challenge anyone to a shootout competition.

“He swears he has the best jump shot.”

There's a strong possibility he does, too.

Two weeks ago, Ohio State redshirt junior guard Kam Williams said he “might have seen [Jent] miss two shots so far.”

“When he demonstrates a drill, it seems like he never misses,” Williams said of his new assistant coach. “He shoots the same form every single time.”

Jent is known around the basketball world as one of the best shooting teachers out there, but his impact on this Ohio State program in the coming years will go much deeper than just jump shots. He’s also poised to bring a certain toughness and culture back to the program many felt was lacking the last few years.

Jent is competitive, fiery and, as a former Ohio State player, mentions his “sense of pride” as a reason why he makes his message pretty clear during practice.

“That competitive spirit with the team every day and just being around and making guys feel like we can go to another level and be even better than we were yesterday,” Loving said. “Just that mentality from Coach Jent is something I feel like we feed off of now.”

In all likelihood, I think he is bye-bye. I appreciate everything that he has done for Ohio State both as a player and as a coach. I always loved his hustle and determination as a player. It is just too bad that he could not translate that to the guys that he was coaching. I hope that he will a successful HC position sometime in the future. Best of luck to him and his family.

Strike one for the new guy whoever he is.

I hope that some day he gives me cause to know his name.

Jent was the man. Loved his play. No question he could coach too. Plenty of success at the next level to suggest that he could. Frankly, it makes me question the coachability of some of the kids on the team.

Chris Jent, former Ohio State basketball assistant, hired by Atlanta Hawks
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Chris Jent, the former Ohio State basketball and Cavaliers assistant coach, has landed back in the NBA.

The Atlanta Hawks on Friday announced that they've hired Jent as an assistant coach on head coach Mike Budenholzer's staff.

"Chris is a great fit with our coaching staff. Player development is at the core of our basketball program and he has a track record of improving players' skill level and understanding of the game at every level," Budenholzer said in a statement. "His experiences as a coach and former player will add to our group."

Jent, an Ohio State alum, returned to the Buckeyes last year for his second stint as an assistant under previous coach Thad Matta. When Matta was fired in June, Jent interviewed for the Buckeyes head coaching position that eventually went to former Butler coach Chris Holtmann.

Los Angeles Lakers to hire Atlanta Hawks assistant Chris Jent as Darvin Ham's top assistant, sources say

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to hire Atlanta Hawks assistant Chris Jent as Darvin Ham's top assistant coach on his staff, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Ham, a first-time head coach, made Jent a priority and recruited him hard after getting the Lakers job, sources told Wojnarowski.

Ham and Jent coached with the Hawks together in 2017-18 and Jent -- who played collegiately at Ohio State before playing briefly in the NBA as well as overseas -- also has ties to Lakers star LeBron James, having served as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2006 to 2011.
