Guards battle for position
BayHawks roster has limited spots for backcourt

BY DUANE RANKIN

The potential roster makeup concerns Raheem Moss.

The Erie BayHawks will likely pick four big men from training camp, leaving six spots for the other 13 players in camp.

"As a guard out here, it's going to be real slim," said Moss, who played at Cleveland State.

When the BayHawks make their first cuts, Moss and the other perimeter players will find which ones did enough to continue training camp.

The deadline to trim the roster from 17 to 12 is 5 p.m. Thursday.

The 6-7 Harris, who played at Ohio State, has shown himself to be one of the better shooters in camp. Harris said he's taken at least 500 extra shots a day.

"When I come out here, you can see the results," he said.

Ivan Harris, #34 for the Erie Bayhawks, takes a shot against the defense of Coleman Collins, #18 for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, at their game in Erie on Dec. 14.
A word to the wise about Ivan Harris:

Don't get too close to him because he's on fire right now.

"Once I get hot, it's like I can't stop," Harris said.

With a quick lefty release and striking confidence, Harris has established himself as one of the best shooters in the entire D-League.

"That's one of the gifts that I have," Harris said.

A 6-foot, 7-inch, 220-pound forward, Harris has made a sweltering 55.9 percent of his shots during the Erie BayHawks' current four-game winning streak.

In a 96-94 overtime win Sunday against Fort Wayne, Harris finished with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

"He's a great guy and I'm glad to see him having the success that he's having," BayHawks coach John Treloar said.

Harris is second on the team in scoring at 16.5 points a game. At Ohio State, he earned the nickname "Microwave" because of his ability to get hot immediately.

Harris started 32 games for the Ohio State squad featuring Greg Oden and Mike Conley, Jr., that lost to Florida in the 2007 national title game.

When he mentioned that after Sunday's game in the BayHawks' locker room, teammate Erik Daniels jokingly said, "Ah, man. He's making up names."

Harris, 24, responded by adamantly suggesting to call Ohio State coach Thad Matta or look it up on the Internet.

Don't sweat it, Ivan.

Program Alert:
NBA TV will be airing the recent contest, Erie Bayhawks vs Dakota Wizards at 4pm Eastern today for anyone who might have that network. I have not seen Ivan play since the National Title game so that will be cool.

This really was a good season for Harris to make it get back to the States because the D-League is growing and gaining more attention with their new ambitious President Dan Reed. In early January Ivan will participate in an annual event called the D-League Showcase. It is a four day competition that brings all 16 teams to one location. The Showcase allows various NBA coaches, gms, and scouting evaluators to take a look at prospects as well as coaches in a central setting. It was previously thought that the two expansion teams would be excluded from the event. However, last week Reed announced that Reno and Erie would indeed be participating. This is a great oppurtunity for Ivan to get more exposure and show his stuff in front scouts from every NBA team.

A quick update on the "Microwave" Ivan Harris.

In his last three games, Ivan has dropped 32, 22, and 14 in wins for his team the Erie Bayhawks. In fact, the Bayhawks are currently on a nice seven game winning streak.

Just about every D-League game is broadcasted on nba.com via webcast. The Bayhawks have a game tonight (thursday) vs Dakota at 7pm if anyone wants to see the shooter from Springfield, Ohio. They have another player named Eric Daniels who I think is worthy of a NBA roster right now.

Ivan Harris, #34 for the Erie Bayhawks, takes a shot against the defense of Coleman Collins, #18 for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, at their game in Erie on Dec. 14.

Erie BayHawks forward Ivan Harris has been money from that spot since third grade when he played in a church basketball league in Atlanta.

"I used to make it every time," Harris said with a smile.

Harris, 25, still likes to shoot it from that area code, but his range is more wide spread these days.

So when the confident left-hander shows off that stroke, the ensuing sound usually heard is "swish."

"When Ivan touches the ball and he's ready to shoot it, I think it's going to go in every time," Erie forward Jackie Manuel said.

Averaging 16.2 points a game, Harris is shooting 48.2 percent from the field, 42.7 percent from 3-point range and 86.4 percent from the free-throw line.

In his past 15 games, Harris has made an amazing 53.7 percent of his 3-point attempts.

"He's fun to watch," Gannon coach John Reilly said. "I don't know if I've ever seen someone shoot it with ease at his size."

The Ohio State graduate has had to do more than just make jump shots this season, though.

Since the BayHawks have one of the D-League's shortest teams, the 6-foot 7-inch, 220-pound Harris is playing power forward instead of his natural small forward.

"It's tough, man," Harris said. "I'm playing out of position right now and just banging with them all game and then trying to shoot the ball, too? It's tough, but I've got to focus on the little things."
