F Ivan Harris (official thread)

Ivan Harris and the Erie Bayhawks concluded their inaugural season with an opening round (single elimination) playoff loss to the top seeded Colorado 14ers. The D-League added a new twist to the playoffs this season where the top two seeds could actually choose who their opponent would be among the four lowest seeds. Colorado scouted Erie pretty well as they would coast to an easy 129-108 win fueled by an offensive explosion in the 2nd quarter.

My guy Ivan Harris finished with 18 points (7-11 from the field) with 7 boards.

As far as the future, well it's obvious the Sixers did not sign Harris to the 10 day deal. (or anyone else for that matter as T. Young is recovering quite well from the ankle injury). But you have to think that he's right on schedule by even being in those talks. This time last year, there wasn't even a Erie Bayhawks team. Yet they form, Ivan receives a call, he basically walks on to a tryout, makes the team, and from there is able to get his shooting ability recognized. I believe there is a roster spot in the NBA for Harris if he can continue to improve his defense and rebounding.

Well, I've enjoyed following Ivan during his first pro season in the States, and wish him luck in his off-season ventures. Go Bucks :osu:

ERIE, Pa. ? Ivan Harris has one goal: to play in the National Basketball Association.

The 6-foot-7-inch Springfield native?s journey has included stops in Columbus at Ohio State University and in Finland. But to be more visible to NBA teams, he had to return home.

Harris spent this season with the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League, also known as the D-League, where players hone their skills with hopes of catching on with an NBA team.

?Last year, (the scouts) didn?t see me play,? Harris said. ?Coming out of college, I was a starter, but I wasn?t a star at Ohio State. I think this will help me skill-wise and give me an opportunity to play against the top guys in the country.?

Harris said the level of play is visibly different in the D-League.

?Overseas, it?s more finesse, a lot of shooters,? Harris said. ?(In the D-League) there are a lot of bangers down low. They?re faster and more athletic. There?s always a team that has a tough matchup.?

The D-League means exposure for Ivan Harris

Harris took a pay cut for the chance to play ?every game? in front of NBA scouts.

By Michael Cooper
Staff Writer Updated 1:34 AM Saturday, April 18, 2009 FORT WAYNE, Ind. ? It?s 40 minutes before tip-off at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum on Friday, April 10.
Ivan Harris stands behind the 3-point line on the right wing, waiting for a bounce pass from Erie BayHawks assistant coach Benjamin McDonald.
Harris pushes his left hand forward, catches the ball and gently rolls it into his fingertips. In one motion, Harris brings the ball to his chest, squares his feet, hops and releases the ball.
With perfect arc and rotation, the ball dives through the basket, the iron. The net jumps up like a teenager from her seat at a scary movie.
McDonald catches the ball right out of the net and throws another bounce pass.
Swish.
Again, another bounce pass.

Harris, a 6-foot-7 forward, can?t miss.
On this night, the BayHawks face NBA Development League Central Division rival Fort Wayne with a playoff berth on the line. Win and they?re in ? it doesn?t get much simpler than that.

The Cavaliers have invited two BayHawks: forward Ivan Harris and center Jarvis Gunter.

"I discussed those guys with the Cavs," Treloar said. "They're bringing in a number of D-League guys and guys who played in Europe.

"I kind of went through all our players on our roster as well as other D-League rosters with them and they made the decision who they were going to invite."

Starting all 50 games this past season, the 6-foot 7-inch Harris averaged 15.7 points and shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range.

Gunter, a 6-foot 10-inch forward, averaged only three points but saw increased playing time toward the end of the season.

"I think on Ivan's case, Ivan had a great year, and him being an Ohio State guy, I think (the Cavaliers) felt as if he earned that," Treloar said.

Ex-Buckeye Harris Still Pursuing NBA Dream
June 20, 2009
By Bob Baptist, The Columbus Dispatch, Ohio

Jun. 20--Ivan Harris is sharing living space with Mike Conley Jr. this summer while they spend the basketball offseason in Columbus.

Harris hopes it is not as close as he ever gets to the NBA.

Two years after they were starters on the Ohio State team that won 35 games and played in the NCAA championship game, Conley is preparing for his third season in the NBA while Harris hopes some team in the league will just give him a chance.

"It's hard to get into the NBA if you don't get drafted," said Harris, who played the past two seasons in Finland and in the NBA Development League. "You just have to show scouts that you want it ... that you want to play in the NBA and you're going to bust your butt to get there."

He spoke this week before a 90-minute workout with three other players at Soar of Columbus, a spartan, two-room facility tucked away in a business park on E. Powell Road.

Dave Spiller, a former Ohio State assistant coach who recruited the 6-foot-7 Harris and has trained him for years, said he is trying to infuse his client with a sense of urgency.

"This has got to be the year he gets in," Spiller said. "Lawrence Funderburke, I remember, it took him four or five years and he came back and got in. I'm telling Ivan, 'OK, you've been out a couple of years now, you've got to get in. You've got to make a move this year.' "

Harris will have ample opportunity the next few weeks.

He is one of 25 D-League players invited to Los Angeles this weekend to play for NBA scouts.

He will be in Cleveland next weekend for a camp from which two players will be picked for the Cavaliers' summer-league team.

He will be in Orlando from July 6-8 for a tournament at which European scouts evaluate free-agent prospects for next season. Westland graduate Josh Bostic, the Division II Player of the Year at Findlay and a Spiller client, also has been invited there.

"You have to show these scouts that you have no flaws in your game," Harris said.

What Harris still must show them is that he can do more than make open shots.

Elite Mini-Camp Players in D-League Blogs in Fan Voice

The 2009 NBA D-League Pre-Draft Camp is taking place this weekend in California, but the league is also holding a separate camp that will be of more interest to NBA front offices. The NBA D-League Elite Mini-Camp consists of 26 players who played during the 2006-07 season who will be playing in scrimmages and performing drills in front of scouts from 17 different NBA teams. Let's take a look at each of the 26 invitees who will be in action this weekend.

Ivan Harris, Erie ? A member of Ohio State?s 2007 Final Four team, Harris spent his second pro season in the NBA D-League with Erie. He appeared in all 50 games and averaged 15.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. Harris is selective but an accurate three-point shooter, knocking down 39 of his 91 attempts for Erie.

Go Ivan! The next Donyell Marshall coming up. :)

The wait is over for Erie BayHawks forward Ivan Harris.

It's time for him to show the Cleveland Cavaliers what he can do during their three-day free-agent mini-camp that starts today at Cleveland Clinic Courts in Independence, Ohio.

"All this waiting," a laughing Harris said earlier this week. "I'm ready to go out there and play. I'm excited that I'm getting the opportunity to do something like this. Just can't wait to get out on that floor."

Erie forward Jarvis Gunter also will participate in the mini-camp in hopes of earning a spot on the Cavaliers' summer league roster for next month's NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

While Gunter's chances of making the roster are slim because he isn't as polished offensively, Harris has a more legitimate chance of landing a spot with the Cavaliers.

In his rookie season with the BayHawks, the 6-foot 7-inch Harris averaged 15.7 points and 5.1 rebounds.

"Ivan had a great year, and him being an Ohio State guy, I think (the Cavaliers) felt as if he earned (a spot in their mini-camp)," Erie coach John Treloar said.

Only two players from the camp make the roster, Harris said.

"Hopefully I'll be one of the two," said Harris, who is from Springfield, Ohio, which is three hours from Cleveland.

Microwave time again

The NBA D-League selection draft is tonight. After the selections, teams will begin to fill out rosters at their respective training camps. Looks like Ivan Harris has a shot to return with the Erie Bayhawks. Ivan was one of the best three point shooters in the entire NBA D-League last season. Erie made the playoffs in their expansion year last season.

BayHawks Announce Initial Training Camp Invitees - OurSports Central - Independent and Minor League Sports News

D-League player allocation.

Short vid from this past Summer. Ivan just barely missed the cut for the Cavs Summer League Team. For some reason they chose scrubs over a sharpshooter like Ivan. He later worked out at the Hawks Summer Camp where he met back up with Othello Hunter.

Four BayHawks return for a second stint with D-League team
By DUANE RANKIN
[email protected]

They're back.

Small forward Ivan Harris, power forward Jarvis Gunter and guards Jackie Manuel and Oliver Lafayette were part of the Erie BayHawks' expansion year that ended with them making the D-League playoffs last season.

Now they return confident in their chances of making the team once again to continue pursing their dream of making an NBA roster through the D-League.

"I just want to come out here and give it another chance," said Harris, who was part of the Ohio State team that made it to the 2007 NCAA national title game.

Harris is Erie's top returning scorer, as he averaged 15.7 points and shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range.

One of the D-League's best shooters, Ivan Harris, has been way off so far, connecting on just 29.6 percent of his field-goal attempts.

Harris is 0-for-4 from 3-point range. A season ago, the small forward out of Ohio State averaged 15.7 points, shot 48 percent from the field overall and nailed 42.9 percent of his 3-point shots.

"I think I've been thinking too much on my shots," he said. "I think that's what my problem is. Thinking out there and trying to make something happen instead of concentrating on my shot.

"Just do what I do. I'm getting wide open shots. I've just got to knock them down."

Treloar said Harris is trying to gain court familiarity with his new teammates and vice versa, but he's noticing his top returning scorer isn't ready to launch when the ball comes his way.

"It seems like there has been several times where he's caught the basketball not ready and hurried his shot," Treloar said.

"So we'll continue to work, show him the film and help him to recognize when the shots are going to be there for him."

Harris scores 19, Bryant 18 in victory over Bakersfield
By JOHN DUDLEY

The Erie BayHawks finally found a reason to celebrate at home.
Losers of their first five at Tullio Arena this season, the BayHawks erased an early deficit against the Bakersfield Jam on Tuesday and pulled away for a 91-78 win before an announced crowd of 2,146.

Ivan Harris led the BayHawks (4-9) with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and John Bryant added 18 points and matched his season high with 16 rebounds. Erie held Bakersfield (2-12) to 38 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers.
