Ohio State walkon and St. Ed grad Jake Lorbach trades his dorm room for a better seat on the bench: NCAA Tournament notes

DAYTON, Ohio ? Jake Lorbach's NCAA Tournament is similar this year to what it was a year ago. A lot of watching. But this season, he has a better seat. And last year, he couldn't jump off a chair in his dorm room and make a free throw.

A 2011 St. Ed grad, Lorbach spent his first year at Ohio State as a normal freshman. But last spring, the former basketball and volleyball player for the Eagles got the itch to play again. He called his high school coach, Eric Flannery. Flannery emailed OSU assistant Jeff Boals. Boals called Lorbach and checked him out.

In October, with the Buckeyes featuring just 10 scholarship players and needing bodies, Lorbach made the team at the walkon tryouts. And Friday night, he found himself at the foul line with 1:07 left in No. 2 seed Ohio State's easy first-round tournament win over No. 15 seed Iona.

?I took a deep breath before I shot the first one, and I had really good form and it felt really nice and it went down pure,? Lorbach said Saturday in the Ohio State locker room, as the Buckeyes got ready to face No. 10 seed Iowa State on Sunday. ?The second one, I got too excited and I lost all form and it clanked really bad. But I was still happy I scored.?

I don't know if it was Jake or one of the other walk-ons who came running about 10 feet onto the court after Craft made his three pointer against Iowa State only to be restrained by one of his teammates. He was so happy and I was so happy for him and his teammates:bow: Jake

Matta said that Jake can really get off of the floor but I think his nerves got the best of him last night:lol:

“He’s a volleyball player,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said after No. 3 Ohio State’s 86-48 win over Bryant in Value City on Wednesday night, the Buckeyes’ first of four games as part of the Gotham Classic. “He can usually jump about a foot above the rim.”
A Jake Lorbach two-handed slam? St. Edward product's six points puts icing on No. 3 Ohio State's 86-48 win over Bryant
