It didn't take long for Loving to make his mark in the City League, registering 24 points and seven rebounds as well as hitting a clutch put-back in the closing seconds of regulation against Central Catholic to force overtime.
St. John's eventually prevailed 65-61 in that Jan. 15 game, which proved to be the difference separating the top two seeds between the No. 1 Titans and No. 2 Irish.
Loving notched a career-high 25 points in an impressive 81-60 win at Rogers on Jan. 29, and last week scored all of his game-high 17 points in the first half of a key 61-46 CL win over Whitmer, his first matchup against Hayes as prep players.
Like Hayes, Loving also has had a few ups and downs. He managed just six points in the Titans' only CL loss, a 60-58 setback Friday at Libbey.
His game includes the versatility of fine inside scoring ability as well as the range to shoot 3-pointers. He is 14-of-32 on 3-pointers, and also leads St. John's in free-throw shooting at 81 percent (65-of-80).
?Marc is a pretty special kind of player,? Titans coach Ed Heintschel said. ?He has a very high basketball IQ. He's 6-foot-7 with perimeter skills, he understands the game, he makes his teammates better, he plays hard, and he's learning the physicality of the game. There are a lot of factors that make him good. He's has a chance to be a very, very special player.?
Loving has negotiated his transition to high school by working the hardest on his weaknesses.
?Coming up from eighth grade, it's a little bit more developed in high school,? Loving said ?The game's faster, and everyone's stronger and bigger. But the transition was rather easy for me because coach Heintschel's a great coach. He gives you great tools to be a great player.
?The hardest thing for me was strength, and I'm working on that in the weight room.?
