Facts about shut-outs

Just a reminder that the Buckeyes have played 34 games since they last shut out their opponent.

I'm calling it. I believe that streak will end this year, probably on the road. At home, we'll play too much of the bench to get all the way through the 4th qtr of most games.

But this Saturday is a definite possibility anyway.

BTW: The nightmarish post #6 of this thread was obviously made when html tags still worked. I'll attempt to fix it when I have more time.

Interesting. I suspect that shutouts have become far less common throughout college football in recent years due to the levelling effect of scholarship limits and advances in nutrition, training techniques, and facilities at lesser programs and even high schools as well as the advent of spread offense and attendant improvements in QB development. I have no way to prove it though.

I'm glad that I missed this thread the first time. Too bad I had to see it now. My first ever live OSU game was that Illinois debacle. Our seats were at the top of C-deck in the endzone, and even though the play was moving away from us, you could CLEARLY see that it was a forward pass. Even our friends from Illinois who we foolishly invited to go to the game with us agreed...after they were done jumping up and down high fiving each other. :(

Needless to say, I relish every pounding we give them. :oh:

Well, OSU only has 1 shut-out in the last 102 games.

    The one shut-out was against NW 40 games ago. (20-0 ... 9/27/2003)

    The shut-out that preceded the streak was @ Illinois. (41-0 ... 10/10/1998)

I say we end the streak some time in the next 3 weeks.

Perhaps a vBet is in order.

We should have gotten the shutout against Ind. but prob won't against Minn, It would make JT's relation look bad.

Why within the next three weeks? Why the hell not in four weeks? I honestly believe our defense is good enough to do it.

The one thing going against us for a zero is that the D plays a little "squishy" (best way I can describe it, won't say soft) in the opening couple drives of our games. Seems like Heacock likes to kind of "feel out" the opposition before tightening down the screws, which has led to early scores.

Giving up an early drive has been part of OSU's defensive personality for 3 DC's now.

I really believe that Minny, Illi, and NW are bad enough that at least one of them will shoot themselves in the foot and stop the early drive themselves. Then it's just a matter of the backups preserving the shutout at the end.

I agree with XC. I do believe this D has it within them to shutout TSUN in the 'Shoe; and I'd love to see it. As I said in the thread-starting post, the last game against TSUN before I was born was the last time we shut them out. Having the first in my lifetime occur this year against a #2 ranked scUM, with the winner heading to Glendale and the LOSER to the Rose Bowl would be as sweet as it gets.

SportsCenter said that 44-0 was the biggest shutout victory in the Big Ten in 10 years.

Well, it was tOSU's biggest conference shutout since a 48-0 win over Illinois on Nov. 9, 1996. They must have meant tOSU's biggest conference shutout, but that's not what I heard. Here are Big Ten games in the last 10 years that were shutout victories of more than 44-0:

Iowa had a 62-0 whitewash of Indiana in Iowa City in 1997.

Wicsy blasted Indiana 59-0 in Madison in 1999.

TSUN blasted Indiana 58-0 in Ann Arbor in 2000.

Minnesota beat Illinois 45-0 in the MetroDome in 2004.

Might I add that this shut-out was achieved without Mr. Pitcock, who arguably is our best defensive player at his position. (Please, no arguments over opinions on who our defensive MVP is, hence the arguably. Enjoy the shut-out.)
