Favorite Play-by-Play Announcer?

I'm trying to think of a favorite and I honestly don't know. But I honestly don't like many of them, choosing a favorite is difficult. Gus Johnson can be annoying to me. An average dunk could happen and we'd hear "WHOOOOOOOA OMG HAHAHAHAHAHA LOL!!" Just way too over the top sometimes.

I do like Al Michaels and Paul Keels (homer vote). Nessler is alright.

I like Steve Lavin from ESPN. Random. Bobby Knight is pretty excellent too. Neither are really play-by-play though..

Steve Lavin is a fucking douche. I can't stand that fuck.

Dickie V = annoying shithead.

Bingo! I wonder if he's the reason why I watch so little basketball anymore.

I know he gets dinged on here, but I loved Keith Jackson calling The Game. He seemed to me to love all the history to it.

Al Michaels was fantastic when he was with the Reds, but he still seems to me to be one of the most informed announcers in baseball. Joe Morgan.

The guy who called the Browns games back in the days of Otto -- Ken Coleman.

And for a rain delay you couldn't beat Waite Hoyt.

Bob Prince (Pirates) was one I couldn't stand. He's calling the game for baseball and you have no idea what's going on. A few too many Iron City's I guess.

Gus Johnson is great for the end of March Madness. He's very overboard for small games with no real suspense, especially in football.

If by random you mean sounding like Alex Trebek during every single description, giving multiple answers separated by OR.

That was a great bunny... or a tear drop. :bonk:

I haven't seen Lavin a ton, but from what I saw of him this year he was unbiased and informative. And not annoying.
He's very fair, balanced and positive in his broadcasts.

His frequent football references are a little tiring, but the double descriptions get under my skin. He's nowhere near as annoying as rafferty or vitale (who became that at ESPN, he used to be a solid broadcaster with none of that nonsense).

I guess I didn't notice the football references. I pretty much only watch college basketball on ESPN if it's OSU or some other game that I find interesting (not many). Is it stuff like "Turner is the QB of the Buckeye offense"? Because that annoys me. Just call him the point guard.

The pairing for the OSU game last night was unbearable. Rafferty was one of them, right? He was pretty awful.

Can we just put Verne Lundquist out to pasture now???
you might want to keep it down because he is on the 16th hole and they are putting:) for college basketball my all time favorites were Dick Enberg partnered with Al McGuire and Billy Packer. They were very good in their day.

Best football for a Cleveland fan Ken Coleman as already mentioned and Gib Shanley on radio. They were excellent:) Joe Tait is very good on for professional basketball. Doing it all by himself.

Damnit! I forgot about the Master's. I thought I was done with him after the Tenn game. That's another weekend I have to spend listening to his jibberish. I bet he even refers to the SEC a few times. UGH!

Verne, what a total jackass...

I find that I basically hate most color commentators, just a big distraction most of the time.

Something that most people disagree with me is on Joe Buck, whom I can't stand during football season. He is an arrogant ass, and he doesn't stick to play by play, he HAS to pretend to be a color commentator and do someone elses job. Of course, he gets stuck with "Troy 'huh?' Aikman", so I suppose he feels he needs to fill the "empty" air.

Still, I vividly remember him FREAKING out when Randy Moss pretended to moon the crowd, acted like the guy had committed treason or something. Again, maybe just IMO, but I can't stand him.

I hate the Dodgers, but damn I love to hear Vin Sculley call a game. Ernie Harwell from the Tigers radio was a joy as well.

If you want to learn pitching, just listen to Tom Seaver on a Mets broadcast or Bert Blyleven for the Twinkies. I hated Harry Carey when I was a kid, but he kinda grew on me when I got older. Steve Stone was pretty solid and informative as well. I heard Dizzy Dean was a hoot back in the day but drove the censors crazy when he threw out terms like "poop shoot" live on the air.

On the other side, nobody put me to sleep like Herb Snore for the Tribe.
