Back around where i'm from pay lake fishing has turned into an almost scientologist cult experience. I love fishing so it's all good to me,but it's funny to see these guys roll in driving 500 dollar trucks with 1000 dollar fishing gear..priorities man..priorities.

Last year was the best fishing I've ever done in my life. The first time I caught a largemouth over 8lbs (digi weighed). Caught a white crappie that was .2 under 2lbs all at the same place.

This might sound weird but I was a die hard crappie fisherman at one point. I had a pretty sweet spot, but would fish exclusively for them pretty much everywhere I went. My favorite way to fish for crappie is night fishing with small thill stick bobbers with a small light attached to it. Typically I use bait fish that are always under 3 inches long. It's kind of trippy when they get turned on at 4am and you have little lights on the pond going apeshit. I usually will bring an extra pole with a jitterbug setup on it. It's a pretty cool way to bass fish at night as well. If you can't tell im nocturnal.

Heading back to Ohio in early July and my old man wants to go on a head boat on Lake Erie. Any recommendations for good ones or thoughts on whether the fishing is likely to be decent?

Depends what decent means to you. Where you looking at going out of, and what are you wanting to catch?

Because a 15 lb sheepshead can say ,.fuck you, your drag and your ultra light rod and go diving to the bottom and see if you can do a damn thing about it.

I remember catching some of those ugly bastards when we used to perch fish in Lake Erie as kids. It was just like pulling up a boat anchor, you knew what you had. Now Sheephead down south that is a whole other story.....

I keep an old Berkely lightning light rod with a shakespeare under spin cast reel for an extra perch rod (because it takes up no space)... its got like 4lb test on it, the drag has no chance against even a medium sized sheepshead you better grab the line or its gonna run it all out. But its fun catching a 10 lb pissed off fish on a rod that small.
