Wilder is an athlete that could end up at defensive end, linebacker, or even running back in the right system. He is best on the defensive side of the ball because he gets after the quarterback. He is explosive off the ball, he is very strong, and he is an aggressive player. He is a little stiff and he needs to work on disengaging a little quicker, but he will be a dangerous stand up backer or defensive end on the next level. - Chad Simmons

It's early, but Tampa Plant junior RB/LB James Wilder Jr. has Gators leading Top 5

By Chris Hays

For Tampa Plant junior standout James Wilder Jr., it's a bit early in the process to be narrowing down his list of potential colleges. Heck, he doesn't even know what position he'll play in college.

He's a running back first, and all high school running backs want to be a running back at the next level, right? But then again, no one can stop him on the defensive side of the ball, either. He's a massive running back at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, and makes for a formidable DE/LB for Plant, which plays at the Citrus Bowl on Friday at 7 p.m. in the 5A state championship against Bradenton Manatee.

Wilder, the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back James Wilder, doesn't have to decide anything at this point in the process, but he does have a top 5: Florida, Florida State, Miami, USC and Tennessee. And of those five, since he's only taken one recruiting visit to Gainesville, the Gators are No. 1 for the moment.

"I really don't have anything to compare it to," Wilder told the St. Petersburg Times of UF. "It's the best right now because it's the only one."

Wilder has just over 800 yards rushing this season, as does backfield running mate T.J. Glover, just another of the talent-rich Plant squad, which defeated Lakeland last week to get to Orlando. Wilder has 13 touchdowns.

Football: Plant's Wilder named U.S. Army All-American Combine MVP

By Eduardo A. Encina

Plant junior running back/defensive end James Wilder Jr. has been named MVP of the U.S. Army All-American Combine, Panthers coach Robert Weiner said.

Wilder, who helped lead Plant to the Class 5A state title last month, shined at the combine, which features some of the top juniors in the nation. For many, the combine, which is similar to the NFL combine in format, its essentially a tryout for next year's U.S. Army All-American Game, but Wilder was one of 19 juniors who have already received invitations.

Wilder, the Times All-Suncoast Defensive Player of the Year this past season, impressed recruiting experts from the time he registered for the combine, being named to Rivals.com's All-Lobby team merely from an eye test. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound junior went on to impress at Friday's combine.

Wilder owns offers from at least 25 major Division I schools, including Miami, Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, Georgia and USC, but the colleges vary on where they want him to play. Miami is a favorite because likes that they are recruiting him as a running back. Florida is recruiting him as a linebacker and Tennessee believes he can play either running back or linebacker.

"He looks like a linebacker," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Mike Farrell said on the website. "He has long arms, long build. He almost looks too tall to be a running back, but if you see him on film he can play either because he's very physical. He runs with good leverage."

Same school as '07 QB Robert Marve, '09 QB Aaron Murray and TE Orson Charles and a host of other players that went to big time programs. The two QBs were FHSAA Mr. Football if I'm not mistaken. Along with Seffner Armwood, Plant is one of the top two programs in Tampa. Plant isn't really known as a pipeline to any school, and most of the kids coming out of Plant seem to take an open minded approach to recruiting.

It's VERY early but Vaughters and Wilder are two of the best players I've seen film of in the 2011 class...and they both have offers from EVERYONE.

Wow, what a player. Obviously he is an outstanding athlete, but I like how downhill he is on defense...his instincts and athleticism get him down the field quick to the ball carrier. He seems really alert to whats going on, especially being on the LOS most of the time...he knows when to turn it on and go, and when to stand up his blocker to his advantage. He runs through the ball carrier with great explosion. Running the ball, I love the vision and how he picks his feet up in traffic, very tough to trip him up with his balance. Ultimately I think he either plays WDE or MIKE and right now it is tough to tell which he would be better at for me. In any event, I would love to see us pursue hard if we have any shot.

Free Rivals - Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Junior of the Year: Wilder has few weaknesses

Recruiting should be interesting with Wilder, who said he'd prefer to play running back instead of linebacker. He finished with about 940 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in his junior year, a dominant force on offense and defense.

What could be so intriguing is that his school list changes depending on which position he's going to play.

If the Plant star settles on running back, he said at the combine that Miami would be his leader with Georgia, Florida and Tennessee also involved.

If it's linebacker, the Gators would move to the front. Since the combine, USC, Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina have entered the fray.

Plant High's James Wilder Jr. is among the top prep recruits in the country of for the Class of 2011.

With National Signing Day 2010 already past, schools and recruiting services are looking ahead to Class of 2011.

The Orlando Sentinel is also doing so and recently released its 2011 Top 100, compiled by Bill Buchalter.

At the top of the list is a familiar name to area football fans: Plant two-way standout James Wilder Jr.

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise, though. On Feb. 1, national recruiting site Rivals.com declared Wilder its 2011 Junior of the Year.

Past Rivals.com Junior of the Year recipients include Terrell Pryor (QB, Ohio State), Jimmy Clausen (QB, Notre Dame) and Percy Harvin (WR, Florida).

Wilder is the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro running back James Wilder, and led the Panthers to the Class 5A state championship this past December, including a shutout win at perennial powerhouse Lakeland High in the semifinals.

As I've stated earlier, James Wilder of Plant High School in Tampa is not only the No. 1 player in Florida but he is the No. 1 player in the nation. The 6-2, 225-pound running back/linebacker, who was All-State at both positions last season, is the son of former All-NFL running back James Wilder of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has offers from every major school but he seems to be leaning to Florida.

Wilder leads group of talented backs
Bradenton Under Armour combine attracts some of Florida top prospects
Originally Published: March 1, 2010

BRADENTON, Fla. -- A group of running backs that featured some of the top prospects in the country, including versatile star James Wilder Jr. (Tampa, Fla./Plant), and one of the top 2012 prospects in the Sunshine State highlighted the Bradenton Under Armour Combine on Sunday at IMG Academies.

One of the big questions about Wilder, who has nearly 50 scholarship offers to his credit and is one of the top overall prospects in the country, is what position he will play in college. Equally good on both sides of the ball, Wilder could easily be an elite linebacker prospect as well. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder worked out at running back on Sunday and that appears to be the position he is leaning toward playing in college.

Wilder ran a 4.45 short shuttle and was impressive during position drills and one-on-one work. Combine that with the work he did on the field last season, nearly 1,000 rushing yards, going both ways and leading his team to the Florida Class 5A championship, and it's clear that he's one of the top prospects in America for the 2011 cycle.

"Coming out here was a great experience," Wilder said. "I love competition. Coming out here to compete and meet new friends and new people. Also, I enjoyed being trained by people that played in the NFL and know what it takes to make it to the next level."
